Darkness into light...

At 3am this morning I was making pancake batter … Not my usual 3am snack choice when I’m raiding the fridge … but tonight no one was falling home… tonight we were revving up to walk for someone special… runners were donned… hoodies on.. a lick of lip balm to finish off the look …

This morning I walked with my loved ones for Pieta House… The Darkness into Light 5k… when we got to Bray strand … there was already a buzz… the rain had stopped… the sound of waves crashing just made you breathe deep and soak up the salty air… and the mood was very special… positive… talking to strangers with their stories at the start and finish… that acknowledging nod... everyone was there for a reason... everyone understood... smiling at the jack russells being carried up the hill cause their legs were too short… the runners, the walkers, the joggers… the dogs… the kids… all crossing the line with one thought on their mind … never forget there’s always light at the end of tunnel… regardless of whether you have lost someone to suicide … the 80,000 Irish both here and in London and Sydney were doing something good... reminding the world that suicide isn't a dirty word...

I did this walk for three reasons…

Sunrise on Bray Strand 4:15

Firstly my family has been effected by suicide… to be fair there isn’t a family in Ireland who hasn’t been touched by it… and being your typical big Irish family with the majority in construction and engineering we were bound to be touched by it … My mum is the eldest of 12… my dad in the middle of 10… I have 64 cousins last count… and we learned the hard way to hound people to talk to each other… or talk to someone… when I see someone I love down in the dumps I make them talk to me… if you’re a regular here you’ll know I’m a chatterbox…  I’ve told them some of my deepest secrets, so they know they can spill and know I won’t tell a soul… I’ve coughed up the cash for counsellors so ‘mam will never know’ but at least they can talk to someone about it, if they can’t tell me… but we are always on constant alert with a family full of young people in times like these…

Secondly, in my close group of friends… I know people who have lost a dad, sister, brother, cousin, best friend, soul mate and son… I’m not related to them but I know how they feel… and there really are no words… but this little walk lets them know I get it… and I love them…

My third reason for walking… Neil Gordon James… Neil was my best friend in Uni… people always said we’d make a great couple, many often asked if we were but we were just too busy being best friends to ever start a romance… we did make a pinky promise that if we both hit 40 and hadn’t met ‘the one’ we’d hook up and have beautiful tall blonde haired children with a cheeky Irish sense of humour who would be great at life drawing… I sorted out his veruccas and when he asked for the ‘truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth’ about periods… I let him have it.. he walked out of the room green in the face but with a huge amount of respect for women! I loved him… perhaps the fact we were both only children gave us such a close bond, we were the long lost siblings that we never had… he cheered me up with just his smile… he was 6’5 and so skinny it wasn’t fair… we pulled all nighters when dissertations needed to be handed in… got drunk and hungover together so many times I couldn’t even count… he always left a toasted tea cake on my desk when I was PMT’d… I usually growled at him … he was one of the good eggs in life…

In third year, he failed his exams… had to repeat them in the summer… and whilst I scamped off to Greece to do bar work* for 3 months .. *sunbathe and chase boys … he was studying… I couldn’t wait to get back to show him my tan and revel in the stories of dodgy greeks and making up cocktails for the locals because we really hadn’t a clue what we were doing! That first day back I met him at registration… I ran to him threw my arms around him and squealed! I missed my best friend and his curly hair…  I wafted about in a white cotton top to show off the tan and was wearing green levis… I fit into levis back then… sigh… he was so full of beans… we spent the afternoon catching up on the grass outside… That night our gang had decided since the grants were in, we’d have a sit down meal in a ‘proper’ Chinese restaurant! It is crystal clear in my head… we laughed so much… everyone had holiday stories … and we were so looking forward to being in 4th year… we were finally there… and it was all ahead of us… we were young, free, in college and had another year before we had to face the real world but we were finding our place …

That night he walked me home, arms linked .. tipsy but happy… I told him to crash in mine… strangely he still hadn’t sorted out his accommodation … he had often stayed over and often stayed with the lads… so I thought nothing of it… I kissed him good night and skipped inside … I was the last person to see him alive… It was the first time I was touched by suicide…

I have run that sequence over and over in my head… What did I miss? Why didn’t he talk to me? My moods went from anger to sadness… was I such a bad friend that he couldn’t tell me what was wrong? Surely after everything we’d been through as friends he could talk to me about anything? I was so angry with him… how could he be so selfish! Had I been blabbing so much about me and my holidays that he couldn’t get a work in edge ways? I felt guilty… Why that night? Why not during the summer? Why? Why? Why?

Turns out my friend loved me so much he waited till I got back so he could say good bye to me before he decided to take his life… He just couldn’t cope and no one had a clue… That happy giggling boy in the Chinese was falling apart inside... The days that followed are a haze of police interviews, the college chaplin getting an earful, identifying his body and my parents flying over to be with me… It wasn’t till I saw my dad in Heathrow airport I properly fell apart… My dad is my hero… surely he could explain why? Right? How could my best friend do this? Dad would have the answer… and for the first time in my life… he didn’t…

We had our first assembly as 4th years the following week, I ran out at the first mention his name… college and life would never be the same again… I think of him often… when I hear another life has been lost to suicide, he is one of the ones who pops into my head… What kind of man would he be now? Would he be married? How many of those tall blonde haired children would he have had? Would he have followed his dreams? Found a girl worthy enough in my eyes? Would we have drifted apart? We’ll never know… and if you google his name… nothing comes up… it’s like he never was…

Neil had put himself in a place where he thought there was no alternative… and no one can blame themselves for someone taking their own life… it took me a while to understand that … and even if I HAD known, he was going to go through with it… it was meticulously planned… he knew exactly who would find him and where… but sometimes people just cannot cope… sometimes the alternative of living is just too much and they can’t see a way out, no matter what you say… and sometimes they genuinely believe that if they weren’t around, life would be easier for their loved ones… it has been nothing but a lifetime of sadness for Neils family…

The only advice I can offer… is be there and talk.. talk and listen… no subject is taboo… nothing in this world is so ridiculous that you can’t whisper it over a cup of tea and find the solution… a friend of mine has a system where his kids to write down their problems and leave it in his coat pocket, they don’t have to say it out loud and feel stupid or ashamed… he reads them… points them in the right direction …. destroys the evidence and never speaks of it again… it works for them…

Our family probably give too much information now… I’ll get a txt is someone bangs their toe… but if it means we’re in each others pockets… so be it… I’m ‘annoying’, ‘interfering’ and ‘nosey’ but I never want to experience it again and I want them to know there’s always an alternative … and secretly, they’re grateful … they can jump on the bus and hang out in my house and rant and rave until they calm down or at least until 'mam calms down'… a better alternative in my opinion even if they eat me out of house and home…

As we crossed the line this morning on Bray strand … there was a calm and moving atmosphere… my family walked in Kilkenny and Sydney… my friends in Malahide and the Phoenix Park… I knew people guiding the light in Limerick, Waterford and Cork... at 4:15am… we all had someone we love on our mind and showed the world that there is light at the end of the tunnel… and its ok to be scared… that people are there for you… and that suicide isn't a dirty word...

Today give someone a big hug… let them know you’re there… for the good and the bad… and tell them that they mean the world to you… because sometimes they need to hear it...

I'm DONE! weigh in 3...

My mojo has gone... sigh ... and when that happens I tend to wallow in 'poor old me' zone until someone or something kicks me in the butt! I was up this week and I knew it was coming... I didn't track... didn't drink my water.. and didn't do my normal exercise routine... I was all a bit meh...

The lovely Patsy Kensit at a Weight Watchers meeting...

But after my meeting I felt like someone had lifted the cloud... my leader is SO motivating... she's funny and normal and understands the weight loss process... she gets the frustration and how you can beat yourself up over a bar of chocolate... but it's also the other people in my class... we all come from different places in life.. there's a new mum... a bride to be and her entire family losing weight for the big day.. there's lots like me.. who just want to be healthy and feel better in their own skin... and even though our paths may not cross all week... we're all different ages.. different lifestyles... boys and girls.. but we're a little clique all to ourselves... when someone misses a class we miss them... when someone is up, we get 'em back on track... and this week that was me...

This week is about writing lists... one of the most important ones... your shopping list...

This works... write down only what you need... and stick to it! Plan your meals for the week... you'll save money and stop throwing out food that you don't use! Never mind the bargains and BOGOFF's... don't imagine you'll have guests and get treats 'just in case' because if they don't turn up.. you'll treat yourself!

Another list... that little card they give you in class.. or that little notebook where you write down your weight losses ... looking back you can see that you CAN do it... and you HAVE done it... and you ARE able to... and for fecks sake COME ON!!!

Another list is your list of goals... and I don't mean 'win a grammy' or 'snog George Clooney' there's a queue for him by the way... your own little list of goals... travel to see the great wall of china... learn to surf... get a pink retro bike (in my top five!)... and just leave them where you can see them... in your diary... on your phone... where you won't lose sight of the bigger picture... and the healthier future you have too! Who wants to be out of breathe on the great wall of china let alone on the fancy pink bike!

Your friends and family list.. saboteurs, get rid! cling ons, be gone! Have a list of people you can call on who know what you're doing and WHY! You're not trying to deprive them of a life of chocolatey happiness... but if they support you... then you support them... you want them to be healthy and happy... you also want to share a bag of chips after the pub instead of eating a whole bag on your own with a burger ... and god knows what else...

I also have another personal list... I've mentioned it on here before but was always afraid to share it... I'm getting very brave in my old age ... I've only ever shown it to my 3 closest friends and every single one of them cried (not my intention!) because they didn't know this is how I really felt about myself... they were sad that this is how I felt about me... and I was too... I'm so good at covering up how I really feel and they had no idea... I'm always the one to say 'I'm grand... don't worry about me...' when I'm not... but I read it last night and thought it was time to share... it's long... you've been warned!

I am done DONE DONE DONE DONE DONE!!!!!

Clearly I was DONE!!! but when I feel like I'm hitting a wall... I read it... I read it last night... and I realise that some things on the list don't even apply to me any more... Lots of things on that list don't even bother me now.. but it reminds me of where I've been and I don't want to go back there... and THAT gives me the kick in the pants I need...

I wrote it in anger... I was in a very sad place at the time... I remember crying whilst I typed it, hence all the typos and spaces ... but I was furious... furious at me! I know there are lots of things that sound the same... but looking back now I know those issues meant so much... Now I read it with a touch of sadness and realise that I'm a lot stronger and more capable than I ever thought I was... and I'd like to be friends with that girl and give her a hug...

SO if this is what it takes... do it! Write a list of where I guarantee by the time you've finished reading it you'll not only be back on the wagon... you'll be driving it!

Sorry its a long post... I do tend to babble...  Have a super Easter weekend and enjoy every second of it ... its a great time for family and friends and the Easter bunny! and whatever you do... don't regret or feel guilty over the weekend... life is very short...

Tangent... My first attempt at 'easter nails!" I got a new dotting tool on eBay for a couple of euro and I'm in love ... I see a lot of polka dots in my future! It really is the little things...

Chart below.. everyone is flying!!! Skinny for summer!!! I'm on a mission to be down next week if I have to chop off a limb! If I've forgotten you or missed your weigh in.. shout... also I think I've got all the Emmas right! eek!

Boys Boys Boys!

a little mini rant today.. (NO eye rolling or sighing!!!)

Too many times I hear.. 'but its SO much easier for men to lose weight!' .. well ladies of the sweeping statement kind, its not you know.. they follow the same programme as us women folk.. they're surrounded by the same temptations and if anything they have less of a support system cause they can't drunkenly spout out in the chipper after 10 pints.. 'I can't have chips I'm doing weight watchers', cause their pals will just have enough ammunition to last a lifetime ... men make the decisions to do it and, in my opinion, most of them don't attach emotions to food as much as we do! But some of them do!!!

We love our gossiping.. our brunches.. our 'he's such a muppet.. *have another biscuit*' tea breaks.. Our lovely hormones allow us to eat Ben & Jerrys JUST BECAUSE OKAY!!!! We cook and feed the young, old, sad and happy! Emotions are attached to food for women since the cave.. Sure hasn't the entire cupcake industry been established for us! I only met up with some friends on Friday I hadn't seen due to 'AWKWARD' circumstances and they brought ice cream! Wimmin!

yes... there is the old 'Venus V Mars' malarky.. but to be honest, its really more Venus V soup! We're THAT different sometimes! But the boys do struggle just as much as us gals do... There are boys in my family who can't pass the biscuit tin without looking inside.. or ask when they arrive for a visit.. 'Did you bake anything nice?' and others who can eat for Ireland and don't understand why we harp on about diets all the time..

Whilst the majority of hits/comments on here are from women... the amount of emails, DMs in twitter and messages on Facebook I get from lads asking all sorts of questions is unreal... and I love that they feel confident enough to ask me.. or let me know they're 'down a pound' or 'hit another stone' or 'they're following the challenge' and 'don't wanna comment but what are wall press ups?' or 'how many points in...?'

It kinda begs the real question.. why can't they ask on here?!

Bravado? Egos? The fact that losing weight has always been seen as a women's club? The lads would have a field day? I'm happy to answer all questions, to all of you if I have the information... (a pint of Carlsberg is 6 pp btw...) if I don't know...  I'll definitely try to find it for you...  but ladies no more sweeping statements... perhaps a little leaf out of their book... they just do it.... as Nike says!

New challenge in the making... time to focus!

Doll x

PS: In case you sang the title and you're of a similar vintage! A lil' flashback HERE!

Say 'I love you...' week 5

Hey Dolls, this week I am blogging on my mobile, sitting outside a hospital, smoking... So bare with me... I know...

I have heard people spouting on about 'the power of twitter' but never truly realized it was true until now... You know the way you can get a song to number one for charity to posting an event and getting it trending, to learning about people we would, on a normal day not have a breeze about... indeed I have partaken in such trends... Dare I say I was rather chuffed with my wit when #irishshadesofgrey started... I even unlocked my twitter account for the day to join the fun... But this weekend an event occurred that really showed me the 'power' of social networking...

Someone who I love had a massive cardiac arrest at the local pool on Saturday at lunchtime... As he was being resuscitated I was nursing a fabulous hangover, making my way through the Irish times crossword and mentally planning the outfit for dinner that evening, an altogether none eventful Saturday afternoon. I was anticipating a call from someone who was about to become a dad.. and when the mobile rang,  I bellowed ... 'Its a girl!!!!!' the reply... 'You have to get to Vincent's A&E... E's had a heart attack' ... My stomach was in my mouth.. my heart sank... Those 30 secs of hopelessness when you don't know which way to turn seemed to last an hour.. Everything was in slow motion... I told Dave I'd ring him once I got there and dizzied around the house closing windows.. Getting dressed... Faffing with alarms... Upon arrival we were directed to that little room out of the publics eyes that only holds news of the worst kind... An aunt was already there.. Another cousin in the car park ... The three of us sat in a tiny room painted dark grey without a window... Knowing it wasn't good but too scared to say it...  Nurse Jackie, I know, handed me an envelope, his cards, phone, car keys watch... His name labelled on the front... it seemed so final... 'we need some information' ... we tried our best to remember dates, places, meds...

We didn't have the full story and the pool was closed.. but we have since found out that a young man called Ciaran saved his life without doubt.. to him our family will be eternally grateful...

The consultant met with us, there were no ICU beds in the hospital and he was going to be transferred to another... an emergency ambulance was prepared so it would be best if we went ahead to be there when he arrived...

By midnight another consultant came to see us .. he was honest, frank and despaired in having to tell us the news.. you could see it in his face... His heart had stopped and he had no idea how much damage had been done... He was on life support, we really should get all the family together as soon as possible... he had a 15% chance of pulling through...We were offered tea .. ah... good old tea..  and we got ourselves in to gear.. who would stop for food, who would break the news to the rest.. And who had cigarettes...

Now.. Im very fond of twitter... I escape there regularly to meet folk I've never met in real life! Some take me to funny places and have me giggling all through lunch..  Some are there to bitch about boys, trouble and boy-trouble and some shamelessly flirt and compliment you just to make your day... Some are there just on their soap boxes looking for a scrap if you're in the mood... And i can find out about the weather before I open the curtains... I get the scores from games that are not on TV... I see the Aussies hitting monday morning whilst the yanks are having Sunday brunch... I step in and out as I feel and escape with a different bunch on a merry path to god knows where...  Throughout this ordeal I was understandably free from all this, consumed with how to fix our boy, make this as painless as possible and work out who was going to save him and what we could do apart from wait and clean (my OCD kicked in about 3am!)... But once he was settled and the long night was in store.. I couldn't phone anyone... It was the wee hours... Friends couldn't help and why wake them now... Family were all in motion.. So at about 4am I took a pic of the ICU and sitting under the most amazing moon I tweeted... '24hrs previously I was on South William Street drinking Blue Sapphire Gin and wanting to dance and here I was in ICU feeling totally helpless..' Then I turned the phone off thinking everyone should be tipsy or asleep in twitterland and headed back to the family room to spend the hours laughing and crying...  hoping and praying.. Till we all started smoking to relieve the boredom and escape the crap coffee and try to breathe (I KNOW!!!) .. It wasn't until I checked in at 7am, I couldn't believe the responses.... I was overwhelmed... Why were these people up and thank god for auto correct! People who I laugh at and with daily, people who put up design links that make me go green with jealousy... The gays, divas, ruggers and drama queens and of course the Skinny Dolls who weigh in and who entertain so often had tweeted their love.. From prayers and a hug to DMs offering lifts and any help... The tears flowed...  the virtual hug I had received sitting on the steps of the hospital smoking at 7am as there sun rose on Sunday morning were enough to make me realize these people are kinda special and very important... tweet peeps you are most awesome and I love you!

I would gladly put every single pound and more back on to get our man through.. We're still critical but stable and the signs are good.. we might just be one of the 15% who pull through... so advice and tips this week... If you are fighting with someone.. if there's someone you haven't seen because you're too busy.. tired.. proud or just can't be bothered... pick up the phone.. or make a point of contacting them today and have that cheesy.. 'I love you' phone call.. hug em tight.. because you don't know whats around the corner ... and in every hospital in the country there are families waiting and watching, praying and hoping for their loved one... and it might be your turn next... so don't make the mistake of thinking .. I'll do it tmrw.. Say  a few prayers for us.. whatever god you pray to... we'll take anyone help at this point.. we're not fussy! To say I have lost the plot point wise is an understatement... not ONE piece of fruit in the hospital shop (and they wonder about the obesity epidemic!) Weigh in below and I'll catch up with you all in the couple of days when life is a bit clearer...

and for the record.. I love all you guys .. you motivate and inspire me all the time.. and keep me on track! so there cheese central!
