What's your body type?

I remember in my first french class in school, our teacher went round the class asking how many brothers and sisters we all had... I was the only, only child in my class and she said... ah you will need to say this...  'Je suis un enfant unique!' I am a unique child, something my mum would probably agree with but for different reasons!

All those magazines and online surveys with headlines that scream 'we can fix you because you've got XYZ body type!' is all nonsense! 'Is your beach body ready?!' Like they say, got a body? at the beach? You've already got a beach body!

You can't package everyone up into the same box! Everyone is different... and people's weight loss journeys are different... Your body type is you! Some people lose two pounds a week and that's that!  Others lose half pound every second week and that's that! There is not one other human on the planet like you and there won't ever be another one like you! You need to do what's good for your body, what make you feel good, what gives you energy and makes you happy! Don't compare your journey to someone else, they're doing whats good for them... Thankfully we're not all the same, we don't all conform to what some magazine tells us... we're all unique so you do you!

Imagine...

Imagine it though?! Write 10 things you love about you... it's not as easy as it sounds! Yet if I said pick 10 faults with your body, we could be here all day! I've a very long list of things I don't like about me... and my Irish DNA means I cannot accept a compliment, it's impossible!

How many of us compliment someone, only to hear ... 'this old thing?! This is ancient, sure I didn't even iron it! I got it for €1 somewhere 15 years ago, god I'm embarrassed to even tell you!' ... It's impossible for us to just say 'thank you, it's my favourite and I love it!'

It's the same when you lose some weight, someone says 'you're looking great!" my first instinct is to say 'ah yeah but I've SO much more to lose! Sure I'm only half way there...' and I pull a 'I'm disappointed in myself too!' face...

Society has us in a heap, if we're not tanned enough, with flawless skin, over 5'11' and a size 10, we feel like we're just not good enough... our boobs are too big/small/flat, our hair is too fine/curly/straight... we're too short or too tall... we can't win and we're fighting an invisible battle!

So lets just give up the fight... lets have a bit of a love in... Today, give yourself a compliment! 'My hair looks so shiny today I love it!' ... 'I have always had fabulous teeth!' ... 'I love having blue eyes' ... 'I feel great in this dress' ... 'I love my new nail polish...' anything to start the ball rolling and every day obsess about one thing about you! It's not as easy as you think but after a while you'll feel a damn sight better about you!

'Happy Weight-watcher-versary...'

... because that's a thing now... so yes.. I'm currently road tripping in the USA on the holiday... or should that be ON VACATION, gotta get the lingo right...  of a lifetime!! SO excited! Follow me over on SnapChat to see what antics I'm up to... there will be a WW meeting or two, and some serious food *drools* but I'm gonna enjoy every bite... Life is too short... and I'll be meeting one of my fav bloggers Dani from 'Weight off my shoulders'... very exciting!

So what is a 'Weight-Watcher-versary' ?! It is 3 years to the day I finally got it... 3 years since something 'clicked'... since I decided enough was enough... and I've been very lucky and privileged to share my journey with all of you! (Oscar speech time ...) but seriously... I've been held accountable by you and by my ramblings on here... and it hasn't been easy... having PCOS adds to the difficulty in losing weight... If I have a euro for every time someone told me to just go on a diet, or try harder when I was giving it my all, I'd be able to stay in the US and live in Sephora! It hasn't been easy.. my body fights against me every single pound but I have chipped away at it... and I haven't thrown in the towel this time.. I've stuck with it... and I'm 8st 10.5lbs lighter that I was this time 3 years ago... I could write all the cliches here ... 'if I can do it anyone can...' etc but this is my journey and I think it's only fitting to show that journey... week by week... ups and downs... PMT and boozy weekends... but I'm still chipping away at it... and that's the biggest difference this time... I haven't given up... and I'm not going to... so when you're up, or you've stayed the same, or you just think you can't keep going...  flick through these... your body will hate you one week and catch up with you the next... but it's only people who stick with it that succeed... so 3 years and counting... this is how it's gone... all those half pounds I have eyerolled at the scales... THEY ALL ADD UP!

I can only thank my two fabulous leaders who are AMAZING and so supportive... I've had many conversations about leaders and how important it is to click with them.. and it's true... and everyone is different... but without them I'd have packed it in again for sure... and even as recently as a few weeks ago when I had my last binge... I had already decided to forget weighing in and leave it till I got back from my holidays (vacation!) but I was so glad I did! I most certainly would have seen that extra week as a pre-holiday party session and lost the plot a little... I always feel supported and I know they gets it.. they've been there and has the t-shirt and honestly they makes the journey so much easier... and the fab gals in my class... it's another great support to have... and all the followers on social media... keeping me on track and kicking my ass when I need it!

It doesn't matter how long you've been doing it, it is still hard, ask any leader, anyone who is a success story... after all the hard work to lose weight, it takes ALL the determination to keep it off and be happy in your own skin... It's a journey... so stick with it... it's only when you give up that you fail... x

choose the right words...

The nicest thing ever has happened to me TWICE last week... Two people emailed me and shared their weigh loss story with me... I believe that's a privilege to be told that... It took me long enough to share mine... but both have inspired me this week to get back into the groove... they are strangers to me... I know nothing more than they have struggled, they're really trying and they've read something on here that made it click for them... and they're both now flying along on their journeys... it's so lovely to know people in the same boat, and they understand how hard it is... but this pair have really given me the kick in the pants I needed...

We have no idea of the power of words... saying something nice to someone can be a game changer for them... and as my granny always said 'if you can't say something nice... zip it!' something I practice daily and trust me I'm very judgey when it comes to eyebrows!

Compliment someone today... 'That's a nice scarf...' 'you're nails are lovely...' and be genuine... when it comes from the heart, people know you mean it... then go home... look in the mirror and say something nice to you... Don't stand there picking faults and flaws... We've all got wobbly bits we hate... Pick a part you love.. your eyes, hair, smile... and just say it out loud... even if you don't believe it, and you probably won't at first... but do it often enough and you will realise you are pretty awesome!

and thank you to my two new friends... you have motivated me so much!

Move on... Motivation Monday

What ever happened yesterday, happened yesterday...

Today is not yesterday
sorry to be bloody obvious...

Letting what happened yesterday, last week at weigh in, last summer, over Christmas.. effect your motivation and mood right now is the sure way to get off track... don't use it as an excuse to give up on yourself...

You cannot change last weeks weigh in... it's done... over... you can learn from it... take the positive from it and use it to your advantage...

But letting it eat up valuable time being negative right now?! No people.. just no!

What's done is done... it can't be changed, a year from now you won't even remember it... so don't waste any precious time dwelling on past... live in the now...

Be kind to your body today and make awesome plans for the future...

PUT YOUR PANTS ON!

Right... January is gone... over... done with... Spring has sprung and we can't be blaming the world and the bad weather and... and... and... everything else for all our woes...

It's February... Set yourself a goal today... Write it down somewhere... on the fridge... on your bathroom mirror... set an alarm every day on your phone and STICK TO IT! Be realistic... 'I want to lose 4lbs this month' ... 'I want to walk a little faster' ... I want to close that button on those jeans... if you lose more BRILLIANT, if your jeans fall off deadly! But don't sit for another month feeling miserable...

I didn't reach my January goal because I'm feeling all sorry for myself... and you know what, the world doesn't care .. it's time to snap out of it! There are 9 weeks to Easter ... NINE!!! If you do what you always do... you get the same results! No more excuses... no more blame game... I am responsible for my weight loss and I'm going to stop feckin' about! If I want it bad enough... I'll do it! Right? RIGHT!?!

SO SNAP OUT OF IT PEOPLE!!!! POSITIVE pants ON!

OK February ya miserable fecker ... BRING IT!

You choose...

You know those cream cakes you walk past in the supermarket, ok RUN past, those chocolate croissants in the board room... that cheese all melty on buttered toast ... you know how good all that stuff tastes... next time you feel like dipping your paws into the biscuit tin just remember this...

There's a reason why all the foods that are bad for us taste so good, between the bad fats, MSG, all the 'E' numbers and additives these foods are addictive! That slogan 'Once you pop you can't stop' is so true! Anyone know someone who opened a tin of Pringles had one and put them away?!?!?! No way! There's an entire industry, within the food industry that's there to make us want products more, they add flavours and chemicals to food so that we all drool at the mention of its name... and no one is saying you can't have a cream bun now and then... but the bad stuff, that's going to stay in your system a lot longer than the 30 secs that you get to enjoy it in your gob! And sometimes that's all we crave, that smell, and taste, once its made it's way to our tummies we just feel guilty and crap and lethargic...

This week be more mindful of what you're eating... is that cupcake worth the momentary bliss or can you eat something else that would give you that same satisfaction but without all the apres binge drama... question things before you just put it in your mouth and forget it ever happened... that old saying 'a minute on the lips a lifetime on the hips' rings true!

Repeat after me...

OK... say the following sentence out loud...

and again...

and once more...

Christmas is nearly here... stressing over your weight will just add to the other stress going on over the silly season... yes you've got to have a plan but invariably things will happen that are out of your control... Auntie Mary will arrive with her 'legendary' Christmas cake and you HAVE to have slice... you'll be out with the girls and your 3 drink rule will be gone in the first cocktail! There's no point worrying about it... yes, you can do damage limitation... you can plan for the meals you make yourself... you can get the family off their bums for a walk or a bike ride or a boogie in the kitchen... you are in control... but sometimes life throws things at you but are you going to sit in the corner saying 'sorry I can't I'm on a diet!' no way nelly .... sitting worrying about it won't make Christmas a fun one... nor will worrying when you're facing the scales in January...

What's my plan? From Christmas eve at midday and all Christmas day, I'm a free agent! No ProPointing, no way, not me! I know subconsciously I'll be doing it anyway, cause I'm kinda brain washed now, but I'm going to enjoy my Christmas, the stuffing, the gravy, the roasties..  all of it! NOM! Also from midday on NYE to midday on New Years Day... it's a ProPoint free zone! I LOVE New Years Eve more the Christmas... so I'm going to enjoy every minute of it... including the full breakfast on New Years morning... I work too hard not to enjoy it and life's too short... and worrying about it won't change it... so forget about the worrying, make a decision what you want to do... as far as I can see we have three choices...

Option 1
Throw the tracker out the window and face the scales in January knowing you're going to be up and accept that and have a bloody good time ...

Option 2
Be happy to maintain over the two weeks... enjoy yourself and plan the meals that are in your control... there are 21 meals every week... there's not a starter and dessert for all of them! You wouldn't have a full Irish every morning during the year... why are the next two weeks any different?

Option 3
Plan to just stay on track and be happy with that... and more power to you...

but whatever you plan to do... worrying won't help! You'll only add to your blood pressure and the family stress that the season is full of! and the scales will still be there and regardless of which option you go for, we'll all be back on the wagon together!

now deep breath...

The hardest step is always the first.... #weigh-in-10

The hardest step is always the first step...
By Stacey Lynch

Long before we were married, Chris would tell me it didn't matter to him what I looked like, or what dress size I wore, or what food I ate – he would always tell me he loved me for my heart and what was inside. The whole inner beauty argument. I guess the comfort of knowing this deep down and having his reassurances meant that I became happy with myself and didn't have a burning desire to change. I was content with where I was. He was a real food lover too and we were lucky enough to have the means to eat out often and enjoy great home cooked food too. I had very good intentions of losing weight for our wedding and did try – but the age old nemesis – my crumbling spine – put paid to all that. I was prescribed steroids and various other medications and my weight just ballooned upwards. I was not able to do very much exercise either – even walking from the bedroom to the bathroom was torture enough some days. I was so unhealthy and my weight was having such a detrimental effect on my back condition. Sore back = no exercise = comfort food = weight gain = sore back. It was a never ending cycle of self destruction.

To be honest – my back was and always will be an excuse. I have suffered with my spinal condition for 20 years, every so often it flairs up and I am floored. I have never been a size 10 super model (and never will!) but I was using the fact I had a sore back to hide behind and not tackle the ever increasing problem of my weight. When Chris died I was over 19 stones (280lbs), was wearing a UK dress size 22/24, had terrible acne and little energy for anything. During January I had plenty of time to think – it was time to make some changes. If I didn't start looking after myself, I would be no good to Ronah or anyone else. Suddenly thrust back into being a single mum meant that I had to stand up to the mark. No one else was going to pick up the slack if I was laid low. I spoke with my GP at length and we agreed a timetable for stopping all the medication. She encouraged me to go back to Weight Watchers, knowing I had some success with them in the past. Coming off all the medication was a nightmare and it wasn't until mid February that I started the plan with any level of commitment.

This was something I could control. Losing Chris was out of my control. The funeral arrangements and those first terrible weeks were out of my control. My future plans had suddenly all be thrown into question. My whole life seemed to be spiralling out of control. But this was something, one thing, I had the power to change and could decide what entered my mouth – good or bad. In my world of chaos, this was one thing that helped me gain some small level of balance back. Whilst struggling to create my new “normal” after losing Chris, I was able to plan my meals and stick to the plan with some gusto. A sense of determination has helped me too. No one can do this for me and if I want to be the best Mum I can be, I have to make the changes required. I have to just get on and do it. No excuses. No hiding behind my back or my grief.

As I write today, I am over 5 and 1/2 stones down and am wearing a UK dress size 14. I still have some way to go and I will get there. I know that I can achieve what I have set my mind to. The past 10 months have shown me that I am able to do so much more than I think I can do. Chris would be proud of me – this I am sure of. I miss him every day, and every day life is tough. Many days I want to give up and go back to where I was. I just know that I can’t do that.

The hardest step is always the first step. Have you taken the 1st step today? I would love to be able to help and support you along your path to being the best you can possibly be.

Stacey Christmas song is her husbands favourite and a beautiful classic...

Nearly there... again, shout out if I missed you! Can I also just do a small shout out to Emma, who reached goal this week losing an AMAZING 14, not a typo, FOURTEEN stone! That's like 3 Victoria Beckams! C'mon everyone... one last push for Christmas... 'Rockin' not 'Rolling' around the tree! Just think about how you'll feel if you have to lose the SAME weight again in the new year!

This is my journey and I'm driving the car... #weigh-in-9

As this goes to post I'm on the way down from a sugar high and contemplating the scales on Saturday morning... when you hear the sound of wailing from Dubins south side tomorrow morning, you'll know its me shouting at the Belgians! The Christmas Markets were AMAZING but that's for another post... but I'll fess up after my weigh-in... I promise...

This weeks guest post is by the new kid on the blogging block... you know when you giggle along and smile at a post, you know you're just as guilty as they are... when you nod along thinking 'yup, me too!'... or you start to well up because you've felt the very same way... you're onto a winner... one of the first times I 'talked' to Paddy on social media he told me the story of the boys giggling in Tesco... and I have felt that pain... I've felt that embarrassment... and his honesty is palpable... he tells it like it is, with a funny twist... and that's why people love him...  I've been a huge fan since he started blogging... Ups or downs, his story is one we all understand... definitely worth a follow... you can find him ..

This is my journey and I'm driving the car...
by Paddy Hourigan
Smaller Plate

Back when I worked in O2 I used to dress up as Santa for the kids Christmas party. I loved it; it was great seeing their little faces light up and playing a part in the magic of Christmas. The irony was lost on me at the time and it's only now that I can see it for what it was. I was 20 years old, dressed up as Santa Claus because I fit the bill. Our body shapes were the same... (Round is a shape, yeah?). I could actually shake my belly like a bowl full of jelly and get away with it. It's actually mortifying when you think about it, isn't it?

Santa has an excuse I suppose. One night a year, he eats about 6 million biscuits, has 3 million glasses of milk, beer, Guinness and whatever else and then he sits on his arse for another 364 days. Sounds like heaven, doesn't it? Life doesn't work like that though. This time last year, I was in Tesco's and some kids had been laughing in one of the aisles. I was convinced they were laughing at me, the fat man in the sweet aisle so I went home and cried my little eyes out. That night, I ended up going online to see what I could do and I stumbled across John Quinlivan's blog and the Skinny Doll's journey. I stayed up until about 2am reading everything, laughing and crying with every post.

On December 2nd, 2013 I took the bull by the horns and went to face the scales. I'd been to Weight Watchers before. I'd always lose a stone or so and celebrate by putting it back on again along with a few extra pounds for good luck. (Lads, don't judge, if a famine hits Ireland again, the fatty's will outlive everyone else... who'll be laughing then!?) About two weeks in, my lovely boss in work, Ms Sarah Duff, was chatting to me about Weight Watchers and she said something that has stuck with me ever since... she said "Make 2014 the year you become the person you want to be". And I did.

In the last 11 months, I have quit my job, gone back to college to train as a teacher, cleared my debt and lost 4 stone to date. I took up running, inspired by John and the constant pressure from my friend Grainne and went from looking like a beached whale when I walked up a stairs to being able to run for an hour solid without stopping. I discovered a different love of food thanks to my WW leader Verette and started to make all of my dishes from scratch. I started to write for fun, I blogged. I turned my life around and learned loads in the process.

Thinking I was king of the world, I decided to stop going to Weight Watchers in September after money was non-existent when I went back to college. I've maintained my weight loss but the latest lesson I've learned is that you don't get rid of something that works perfectly. This week, I gave myself an early Christmas present and re-joined with a view to reaching my goal weight in 2015. Why? Because it works. Bad habits can creep back in so easily if we let them, but I'm stopping them right now. Why? Because I refuse to allow myself to become the person that is asked to play Santa next year. I refuse to be the guy in the sweet aisle, sweating buckets picking up a Golden Crisp, in case anyone spotted me. I'm taking control again. This is my journey and I'm driving the car, I'll go as fast or slow as I want, but I will not reverse, not a chance, penalty points or not.

I was incredibly humbled when Skinny Doll asked me to write for this year's challenge. It meant that I was part of something bigger and that my blog was doing the same for others as hers did for me. I'm not perfect; I've a long way to go before I get to goal, but I'm getting there, it's a journey. I keep saying it, but if I could haul my 22 stone arse off of a couch last January and start running, then anyone can. Go on, make 2015 the year that you become the person you want to be... what's the worst that could happen?

Nearly there... don't give up now!

Just think.... #motivationMonday

It's the time of year to throw in the towel... It's cold, miserable, dark... lots of parties ahead... The supermarkets full of chocolate and 'Christmas size' treats... The cafes have toffee lattes and mince pies... the smell alone is enough to think 'weight who now?' 'Pro-what?' ...  I take my mind reading skills very seriously ... but this is what I'm getting...

'Sure there's only a few more weeks and I'll be tortured with parties and dinners and drinkies, I don't want to be miserable in corner watching everyone else have a ball... Sure that tin of Roses in work is screaming at me every time I walk past it... what's the point? I'll save a few bob if I don't go to my meeting, why bother?...  she'll only tell me I'm up... Maybe it's best to wait till the new year and THEN... THEN I'll be SO focussed... you just watch... THIS TIME NEXT YEAR... '

I have had this conversation in my head MANY, MANY, MANY times... Yes, January will come around shortly and you have two choices... you can either be back where you started with the weight you've already lost back on because you used one day of the year, Christmas is only one day, to lose the plot... OR you can stay as you are now... at least maintaining you're weightloss ... think about why you started...

You Don't Need a New Year, Just a New Day - #weigh-in-7

Most mornings when I wake up, after I realise I'm not a Euromillions winner, I open Instagram... I love seeing everyones healthy breakfasts... and I follow loads of other weight watcher and slimming world members, so my timeline is FULL of healthy and quick ideas that stops me whinging about porridge and talking myself into a scone on the way to work! I was never a breakfast person, so I still need that kick in the pants every morning... and when I open my timeline most mornings, Zoe from '59lbs to go'  has already done a 5/10k run as well as had a delicious breakkie! There have been times when I've just got straight up and gone out my front door for a walk because of her... and THAT's why she's so inspirational! Even when she doesn't feel like it... she just goes for it! You can find her...

You Don't Need a New Year, Just a New Day
by Zoe Cathcart

Like so many other weight watchers out there I have often thought the New Year is the best time to join.I have always found this time of year the most difficult to lose weight, and being a serial joiner in the past if things weren't going well, I would usually stop trying some time in the October-December timeline. The last time I joined was the first meeting in January 2012. I had also joined the previous January and while I had a good start in 2011, when I met my boyfriend things slipped a little.

So why did I wait until the following January to try again? Looking back on the end of 2011, I really don't know why I waited. My cousins now wife's hen party happened In August. When I saw the photos I was disgusted and knew something needed to change. Their wedding was the end of October and I wanted to change by then. My biggest mistake was thinking I could go it alone. I used my money on a gym membership instead of weight watchers (although I could have easily done both). So the weeks went by, and I was regularly using the gym, but I had no control over what I was eating.

Before I knew it my cousins wedding was upon me. The photos from his wedding
once again disgusted me and should have been enough of a kick in the backside to realise what was happening. The problem was, at this stage it was November and in my mind I thought 'Whats the point, it's the worst time of year to lose weight, I'll do something in January!'. We all know that pre diet binge you have the night before you rejoin weight watchers, and eat whatever you want. Well my entire November/December 2011 was a full on binge. I did not go near a scales in that whole time period and have no idea what I weighed before the binge but I do know that by the time January rolled around I was over 14 stone, the heaviest I had ever been in my life.

I did join Weight Watchers that January and by November 2012 everything had changed. I was so close to my goal weight and nothing was making me give up. I was having such a hard time losing the last few pounds and it was hugely disheartening. Week after week I was seeing either no loss, or a small gain followed by a small loss. On November 13th I weighed 9 stone 9 lbs and the last weigh-in before Christmas it was the same. I was proud of myself though, it would have been so easy to give in and gain half a stone to a stone in the same time. I enjoyed my Christmas but did not use it as an excuse to go wild. I chose the days I was having off and tracked every other day. When I went back in January I still weighed 9 stone 9lbs. It only took me a few more weeks to get to by goal weight, and if I had given up who knows if I would ever have gotten there.

I'm not going to lie and say that this is the easiest time in the world to lose weight. Social events, tins of chocolates everywhere, specials on crisps and biscuits in the supermarket, seasonal specials in the coffee shops and hot toddy's to help with a cold. Temptation is all around us and we are told to let our hair down and enjoy it. I read somewhere that the average person gains 7-10lbs between now and Christmas. With 6 weeks to go before Christmas you have 2 choices, you can decide that its too difficult and gain that 7-10lbs, or you can give it your best. In 2011 I gave up, but in 2012 I gave it my best and I never looked back!

Seriously what an inspiration! Zoe's Christmas tune will get you ALL rocking!
Slade!!! I know!

Lots of 7's added on the board this week... great losses! Again, if I've missed someone let me know I was away last week and someone might have slipped through ... and finally... FINALLY... I got my 8th stone! 5 weeks to go... no giving up! I won't allow it!
