Stitch 'n' bitch...

My names Doll and I'm a crochet junkie... I kept that one quiet didn't I!?!

hey... I know I'm also a nail varnish junkie but BOTH keep my paws away from crisps OK!

I have been doing crochet since I was about 6 or 7... every teddy bear had a jumper and/or handbag... several ties were made for special occasions... and it's something I've done consistently all my life.. I can't knit for toffee, two needles and I'm all tangled up... I was kicked out of sewing class and sent to art class.... so its always been my little outlet... and years of insomnia have meant I can do some patterns in the dark!

I am a regular at some of the christmas markets in town... very fancy schmancy hats... tea cosies for the mammies ... and in some coffee shops, you'll spot my 'Java Jackets'...

Recently I 'hooked up' geddit?!? sigh... with a group of like minded boys and girls who knit and crochet for a few hours together on a Sunday afternoon... There's no official title on the group most of these are called 'Stitch 'n' Bitch' or 'Pints & Pearls' ...

Some of these people are SO skilled... and the things they are creating are AMAZING... beautiful children's clothes... custom made clothes for themselves... truly talented... I sit in awe as the needles clickety clack away whilst they sup a bevvie!

Not bad for a Sunday afternoons work eh? Not one drink passed my lips either.. I swear!

Try walking in my shoes... Weigh In 4

You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself
in any direction you choose.
You're on your own.
And you know what you know.
You're the one who will
decide where you go.

This week one of my favourite subjects... SHOES!!! Ahhh many nights have been spent drooling and perving online ... shopping baskets have been full only to cancel and delete because the Credit Union manager lives a few doors down and I can't risk him spotting the postman!

Shoes make us feel good... cause our feet don't gain weight... or bloat... or get PMT'd... they remain consistent... like our earlobes! We can buy them KNOWING they will fit... and we'll feel good about ourselves... as the saying goes... Give a girl the right pair of shoes and she will conquer the world...

The other saying.. never judge someone before you've walked a mile in their shoes... SO true... you don't know what's going on in peoples lives... the struggles they have... losing weight can be a real struggle for someone and a doddle for someone else...
Instead of being all judgey... OH it's easy for him... She's down EVERY week... maybe ask what they did differently...
A lady in my class got to goal this week... she's been losing the SAME 1lb since CHRISTMAS! This week she couldn't stay for the meeting but she was at the gate BEAMING when I arrived and I just knew she'd done it! I gave her the biggest hug! "we're celebrating next week 'cause I can't stay' he said .. and every single person who came in was thrilled for her... she was the hot topic in the queue for the scales...  we've been giving advice and wondering 'what if's' and 'maybe try that' for weeks and all she did this week was change her exercise routine... she's a walker... but instead of going the same route as usual... she got in the car and drove to a new spot and walked there... the hills were a little bit different... the pace was different ... it was a little bit longer but her body noticed the change and she lost that one feckin' pound! It can be as simple as trying something a little bit different... and out bodies get used to eating the same thing... and exercising the same way... try something a little different this week... if you live on porridge.. have weetabix for the week... drink green tea instead of normal tea at your tea break... have a bigger lunch and a smaller dinner... sometimes something very small can make the difference...
It was like an ICA meeting outside in the car park... and everyone was delighted for her... because we all know the struggle... and it meant so much to her...

So time to change your shoes ... be they fancy or practical... get em on ya!

I'll start with the most common one.. your runners, trainers, sneakers... run, jog, walk, stroll... put em on... leave the house for 10mins, out the front door and you'll have to come back... 20 min walk DONE! Simples...

In case you dissolve in the rain or are a vampire... get your DANCING shoes on... now if you want to go all riverdance.. I'd recommend it... I went to a ceili last year and the sweat was dripping off me by the end of it and such great craic!

But what about Salsa, Zumba, Bokwa, Hip Hop ... there's loads of classes out there to suit your tastes and have a boogie with like minded boppers!

By the way there's nothing stopping you from putting on these bad boys and turning up the volume and bopping around your kitchen for a few tunes!

No money till pay day... get yourself done to the bowling alley and burn off some calories... from laughing if nothing else!

You might not have a boat but everyone lives near a park or by the seaside to stick on a pair of walking shoes and just enjoy the breeze...
catch up with the gossip or just give the dog a treat!

Go for a HIKE! Be at one with nature... you can flake out on the couch when you get back but I guarantee you'll feel SO much better than if you never left the house ...

No laughing... I've seen these down in my local pool and it helps build muscles in your legs I'm told! But still they're 'shoes' and maybe snorkeling or diving is something you've wanted to get into... why not join a club over the summer? Or hire some gear when you go on your holidays... its all exercise... plus you get to see fishes AND maybe treasure!

I only WISH I was cool enough to wear these... and have balance... and you don't need a Roller-rink... out on the footpath.. down the park... your abs will be killing you after one go just from trying not to fall!

AND Roller Derby is becoming a big thing at the moment... its fun... fantastic exercise and plus you get all that aggression out!

OK so you will need a rink for ice skating but over the winter months you can get your skate on... if you're a bit wobbly go at the quiet times till you get some confidence and trust me you will not be the only person falling down!

Maybe a ski lesson or two... think Cadburys Milk tray man!

For those who like to spin about... inside or out!

Soccer, tag rugby, rugby, GAA, football, basketball ... whatever you love doing...
stick on your special shoes and do it!

No one knows what struggles people are going through every day... Sometimes we just assume that everyone is doing much better than us, life is a breeze for them and we're the only ones struggling, that's not true... as Depeche Mode sang... "try walking in my shoes" ...

Shoe logic... This also applies to gin! *coughs*

Nearly half way through the challenge and the loss to date is 5st 8.5lbs!!!!
78.5lbs in total!!! Dear god you lot are only FAB!!!

Chart below... if I've missed you.. just shout you know where to find me!

Overhaul…

Ok... 3 weeks into 2014 … spring will be here before you know it and nothing like a good spring clean to clear the cobwebs and get focussed!

Over haul your wardrobe!

I did this before christmas and my GOD did it feel good.. you've got to be ruthless… try everything on (yes thats a bit of a pain…) … and ask yourself these questions… Does it fit me PROPERLY? PROPERLY is the key word there! none of this I'll let it in/out, fix the button/zip/hem … Will I wear it out in public? Will I wear it in the next 6 months? Once you've done that 3 or 4 times… its SO easy… you can tell by just looking at somethings that you'd be mortified to give them to the charity shops! When you lose a bit of weight you change shape.. my friends will testify I am literally pinned into some of my clothes at the moment and they're giving me the nod when I'm flashing people! Rethinking your look make you feel better, stand taller and look less dowdy! Get me! I'm thinking of running for office in the Fashion Police, what with the Oscars coming up! Another thing… don't be going crazy in the sales buying clothes that you 'might' fit into… they'll hang there taunting you… pick something 1 size down and that you can squeeze into… as you lose weight it'll loosen up and THAT feels good!

Over haul your fridge!

Get right in there… that cheese lurking in the back that's in date till 2015… bin it or give it to someone who can enjoy it… if you're the type *puts up paw* that will peep in the fridge in the wee small hours and know its in there waiting to me melted on a bit of toast… get rid of it… Stock up on fresh veg, fruit and seasonings… ginger, garlic, lemon.. lime.. go through your cupboard, Christmas and New Year are gone… and if anything is lurking its just temptation… and if you know its there, it will scream your name in the middle of the night!

Overhaul your 'me' time…

Taking an hour, half an hour to yourself is NECESSARY! Go out the door and walk for 15 minutes and turn around and come back! You'll be surprised how just listening to your music and pacing can just give you that little bit of breathing space… Go somewhere you love, at the weekend go to the beach and just have a stroll… even in this crazy weather it will clear the cobwebs and get you focussed on what you really want, before you have to face a house full of kids / husbands / boyfriend / family! If people get used to taking your time, they'll just keep doing it… and if you're not there they will find a solution to their first world problem… guarantee they'll be alive and kicking when you get back!

Over haul your body..

Over done it at christmas? Broke? Give yourself a home spa.. a mini makeover! Set aside an hour when you won't be interrupted, make sure all big and little people are entertained... grab some fluffy towels, your bath robe, lock the door and light a few smelly tea lights.. start with a 10 minute body brush to clear the dead skin away and get the circulation going… it'll open the pores so toxins can escape.. Natural brushes are best… and work the strokes towards your heart… make a salt scrub... mix sea salt with olive or almond oil into a paste and massage gently all over..again strokes towards the heart… rinse off and lash on your fav body lotion.. a thick layer of E45 will do wonders for your skin… but if you've got some fancy new stuff from santa lash it on…  next… wrap up… and hop under the duvet for half and hour, you'll probably drift off to sleep but when you wake up be sure to drink a large glass of warm water with a slice of lemon to rehydrate and get out in the fresh air… and make that date with yourself often! There's loads of homemade DIY spa lotions and potions you can make too.. cheap and effective and probably the stuff our grannies had to make do with! I'll post some  homemade DIY goodies tomorrow!

Over haul your hobbies…

Try something new! Always wanted to try photography.. quit talking about it and get googling! Knitting? Check out stitch and bitch classes in your area… not only will you get a hand with creating something yourself but you can catch up on the gossip too! There's lots of stuff going on in the evenings and even when you're knackered, once you get there you really get into it and it becomes another skill you have. Plus you're making new pals and you're not stuck watching the box on your bum!
