#TBT

I can clearly remember the evening 'I did it!' ... and here's the thing, I wasn't overwhelmed with emotion, there were no tears on my part, in fact I was trying to dodge the attention... My best pal was in tears on the phone but I just couldn't see the success I had achieved. My face says it all, do we really need to do this? (I'm so grateful we did BTW!) Could we wait until I reach goal? All I could think was 'I still had so much more to lose...' Don't get me wrong I was happy that I was 10 stone lighter than when I started, but it really was just a number to me.

Three weeks after this photo I was on a flight to Gatwick and as was my usual habit, I asked the air hostess for a belt extension as I boarded the plane. She asked for my seat number and said she'd drop it down to me. I slid into the window seat, a seat I always chose because then I was only inconveniencing one fellow passenger and I could lean into the window if they were annoyed with my size (the mind games I play with myself are VERY real!) Fortunately I was with a friend that day and as we sat in our seats, the pilot announced we were on the inaugural flight for this plane, a brand spanking new plane and the only noise in my head was 'UGH and I'll be the first to wear a belt extension on it!' As my pal got ready to belt up, she had mixed up the buckles from the aisle seat with her and when she clasped it together, it was as extended as far as it could go. She leaned in to me and whispered 'I think this will close on you!'... I pretty much growled at her with a daggers look and said 'seriously?!...' but in preparation for the extension belt coming, I had pulled my belt out to its maximum and the two ends met, and closed... what followed was what can only be described as floodgates... The airhostess was so kind, leaning over to say she hadn't forgotten me to which my pal told her 'I've got this...' and she did bless her... I sobbed all the way to London.

That feeling, that feeling of being "normal" whatever the definition of that is, was unreal. The anxiety of asking for the belt extension starts hours before I even leave the house but now I'd never have to ask for an extension belt again. I've never have to wonder if the crew would be kind (I have many stories where they haven't been...), I'd never have to endure dirty looks from passengers 'stuck' beside me (again SO many tales to tell!) but this was what mattered so much more to me.. the number on the scales was just one thing to help me get there but that feeling, the feeling that millions of people know nothing about, of just fitting into a space was unbelievable. Just think of the millions of people getting on a flight today and the seat belt has never ever crossed their mind, like ever! That's what I want.

But without the scales I wouldn't have achieved that loss. I have gained back 3 of the 10 stone I've lost. Pandemic, isolation and the full realisation that I cannot do this alone has had me thinking so much about what was different back then, why can't I do what I did back then? What's missing? I realised it's who I surrounded myself with, it's the online community who really get it. It's that class in Harolds Cross and the amazing people in it, and I needed to find that again. Life moves on and things change but we all have the power to surround ourselves with people who really care and understand. They might just be one person in a class but they've got your back, not just when they need you, but all the time.

I'm not back at the start line. This is something to celebrate. I'm not happy about the weight gain but didn't we all just survive a global pandemic?!?! I've been poorly since the end of last October and I've been putting together the pieces of what has been missing for me. What was SO different back then, I was losing every week. I was so focussed! What did I have then that I don't have now?

A weekly class - I need accountability, I need to face the scales and have someone be a cheerleader for me. Not someone who is going to be stunned at the number on the scales and let me walk away in tears! Not someone who doesn't understand what it means to be so unhappy in their body. I need a cheerleader. Someone on my side. And it doesn't matter what plan it is, if you're in a group of people who motivate and inspire you and get you, then it's for you... bites, syns, points, calories it really doesn't matter, as long as it works for you.

I need to believe in myself. The self doubt it very real right now. Yes I've gained some back but I'm human and it's hard. This is one I'm gonna have to fake it until I make it!

I need to find a group of like minded people who want to talk about the 'WHY' ... People who chat about mindset and where our headspace is at and the reasons why we think about food in certain ways and maybe solutions to fixing them or at least managing them better without all the mental exhaustion. My relationship with food and unwanted weight has been decades long and whilst I won't solve anything overnight, talking to people about why we think that way and breaking old habits is a game changer!

I need to track and meal plan. I do that for the whole week, that suits me. It doesn't always go to plan when there's leftovers or something is about to go off in the fridge and it won't suit everyone but it's right for me. I need to stay away from people who make me feel bad about my journey. It's not wrong for me if it's working for me! Same with the blog, this is my little space on the internet, I'm proud of it. It's not my job, it's somewhere people can come and share. Share good and bad things, put up recipes they love, tips they've heard and it doesn't matter what plan they are doing. It's respectful. I only started it as a space to put up the points of things so I'd remember what they were because WW Ireland didn't have the app most of us could get through changing the location of out iphone location... ugh! But here it is, somewhere people are happy to share their journeys with me and I love that so much.

So this 'Throwback Thursday' is remembering what's successful for you, what works for you. This is your body and your path in life. If Slimming World works - do it, if it's Unislim - go for it, if you're doing ProPoints or counting calories or just being mindful - YOU DO YOU!

The journey continues... and if the word journey bothers you, you're in the wrong part of the internet!

Pandemic weigh-ins!

If ever you needed proof that weight loss is not linear here's the Covid19 weigh-ins since the 24th of March... Honestly I'm fine with it, all the stress, tears, worry, meltdowns, sadness, loneliness and downright fear and I haven't put any weight on... I've had the bad weeks when I've binged and thankfully not purged... I've cried myself to sleep and come down to the kitchen to eat my way through the feelings because it felt like that was the only answer, and in that moment, it was... but I've dusted myself down, got back on plan when I could and have lapped up the positive days, bought loads of fruit and just been kinder to myself... I'm here, my family are all safe and well, we're not going out other than to do the basics for another while yet, our choice and we're all fine with it... no judgement here... there's too many high risks in our family for us to undo all the hard work of the last few months so we're the ones still in masks and spraying anything that moves in front of us! So don't beat yourself up, it's a pandemic! If a cream bun makes you feel better then have it! No one ever expected we'd be safely tucked up in our houses complaining about hairdressers for the first half the year, or there'd be a bunch of madzers buying all the toilet rolls (they're the ones not buying it now btw!) ... We're all just coping with the emotions and the sadness... missed weddings, hugs desperately needed and just good old cups of tea and chats with people we love... the wagon is there, climb aboard when you're ready there's no panic... it's going no where... and we'll all get on when we're good and ready.

Weigh-ins from 23/3/2020 - 9/6/2020
and it's ALL GOOD!

Fail Small...

OK... I'm always banging on about there's no such thing as failing... and there's not... but our mindset sometimes just doesn't play ball does it... but doesn't this quote make a lot of sense? OK put it this way... you've had a nightmare of a morning... you've hoovered in some toast, lashed a load of butter and jam on it, couldn't find your Canderel so you had real sugar, full fat milk in the office and it's someones birthday so you ploughed into a muffin or three as well as the scone you got in the garage with the full fat latte cause you just want to go back to bed... and come lunchtime you're riddled with guilt and feeling rubbish...

'Feck it sure I'm going to have a lovely big pub lunch now because I've no control or will power and if I'm going to go off the rails I'm gonna do it in style!'

Where does that lead us? More guilt and back tracking more than we needed to in the first place... Instead maybe think... OK this morning is a write off, we will always have these mornings, BUT this afternoon won't be! I'll plan my dinner and snacks for the rest of the day and set a reminder for myself to make time to set my breakkie up tonight so I'm not all over the place tomorrow morning...

If you're going to use the word 'FAIL' then fail small... and get yourself back on track...
you deserve it!

The hardest lift...

I know it's all 'New Year New Me!' this time of year but it's no easier in January to get off the couch  than it is in the middle of the summer even if you do buy fancy new trainers!!! I'm the first to close the front door when there's a sniff of rain in case I dissolve but honestly 5 mins out the door and back makes all the difference... You don't need to be training for a marathon or the olympics, there's no race on... just get some fresh cold winter air in your lungs and have the chats with a pal, listen to a podcast whatever your thing is but get out there... make yourself a little promise today... pop on your runners, open the door and walk for 5 mins, even if you have to leave in a huff with the dog just storm out... for no other reason than to see what the neighbours are up to!! (Mine have a new car! Fancy much?!) then walk back and you're done! Try it every day you won't regret it!

Don't stop...

We've all done it... got into the dress, made the communion pics better, got into that next stone bracket and then clapped ourselves on the back and marched off into the sunset thinking 'sure I'm brilliant at this weight loss lark!' Most people I know on this journey me included, never stand back and applaud ourselves... I'll never be a size 10 and I'm perfectly ok with that... but there are days when you're a bit stumped and you think 'feck it I'm never even going to make it to a size 18!' and we can't just be proud of how far we have come already... we should be! Today stand a little taller and remember where you were at the start line, even if the start line happened this morning... you've got plans, you're feeling positive about you, be proud that you're a mum, a great driver, a funny and fabulous friend... be proud of you!

You write YOUR story...

Anyone got a saboteur in their life? Anyone got someone in their ear telling you 'You're FINE the way you are!' 'you don't need to lose weight...' 'You've always been the fun jolly one...' 'You'll just be miserable all the time with your diet food' ? Anyone?

When you decided to take the step to feel better about yourself, to take control of your health, you did it for a reason... Maybe it started out as 'getting into a dress for a wedding...' but when you feel better about you, and you feel in control no one has the right to push you off your pedestal and make you feel like you don't deserve more...

No matter when plan you're doing... Slimming world, Weight Watchers, Counting Calories, just making better choices and going for a walk every day... you're doing it for you... don't let anyone derail you... this is your journey... your life and you're in charge!

You're not a mess!

You're trying on the holiday shorts and no... You're not happy... I know the #BOPO police will tell you you should be happy no matter what but you're not... You hate that you're not at goal, you hate that you're not fitting into your clothes comfortably and you feel like it's a never ending struggle to just feel normal... You just want to throw on a pretty sundress and feel good about yourself... but here's the thing... you're still trying and you're still making more better choices than you ever did before... we all derail... we all jump spectacularly off the wagon... but even one good choice today is better than nothing... one glass of water more than yesterday, one piece of fruit, one 10 min walk is a step in the right direction... but don't throw in the beach towel and think there's no point to any of it... you trying to be a healthier version of you is important...

Going crackers...

New range of savoury crackers out from Tesco for the savoury folks amongst us... Smart pointed per portion on the packs but I've done some of them out per cracker too... Now don't be asking me why the diet maths is the way it is... that's the why... ok?

How long will it take?

Go on... admit it... when you stand in front of the mirror you just whinge about EVERYTHING... I do... my belly is too big, my arms are flabby, my hair is shite today, I hate my legs, my boobs are rubbish... The list goes on and on...

Imagine if your best friend was standing beside you... would she say those things about you? Would she criticise you? Would you let her say those things about her body?

Well there's your answer...

When you're passing a mirror today, don't look away in disgust like me, say one nice thing about you!   It's amazing how just one small comment can make you feel better about yourself...

The Comeback!

You know when life throws a curve ball at you and all your good intentions go out the window? How many of us just throw the towel in and think 'that's it, I'm never going to be happy in my body! I'm never going to feel comfortable being me... what's the point?!' So we let the voices in our head win... we don't trust ourselves enough to believe we really can do it! Because we can, we really can! We just need to work out what we REALLY need to do it... Like minded friends? A meeting where everyone feels the same but can give you tips about getting stronger... Do you need an online buddy to check in with? My thinking has always been, if I was able to do this on my own I would have done it by now but I can't! If I was able to stop binging and purging on my own I wouldn't have needed counsellors or mentors or a sponsor for all those years, I still need them... I need support, I need motivation, I need accountability. However you get these things, at a meeting, a club, a gym, in a FaceBook group if they make you happy you're half way there!

We CAN feel better about ourselves, we CAN feel positive and happy... it's not about numbers on scales... it's not about a label on a dress... it's about how you feel about you and that's hard work! We don't give ourselves time to be a priority, there's too much going on with family, friends, work, life and we always seem to put ourselves on the bottom of the list... I get so fed up with myself but I don't quit. Although I've been off the radar for a while because of 'life' I know what it feels like to be happier than I am now, so I've got to get my mindset back into gear and get back there...

C'mon people lets make the comeback stronger than ever... *puts on 'Eye of the Tiger' LOUDLY*

Glow!

In the last week I have been inspired by SO many people... some have messaged me to chat, or to ask a question and we've just got talking... and these people, strangers, have shown me the light... they have inspired me! So, if you're in a good place, if you're on a roll and you're really feeling it, shine bright, because there are others who need you to motivate them... You will inspire and help people without even knowing! And who knows, the next time you feel like you're stuck, they might just be there to inspire you!

It all adds up!

Just think about the little things that get you closer to goal... think about the weight you've lost and all the little changes you made to get there...

You took the stairs, you parked the car at the end of the car park, you planned your breakfasts for the week, you did your shopping list out, meal planned, went to your meeting, you got up at every ad break and walked around in circles (just me?!)  All these little things add up to the big things... so ONLY being down half a pound, you're still down, you're a step closer to goal... or ONLY staying the same is a result... guess what you haven't gained... you've maintained! So big shout out to the little things that are getting us there!

Keep them up and you'll be closer to goal with every step!

NOW!

How many of us stood up at the 14 weeks to Christmas mark shouting 'I'll be down 2 stone by then!' ? How many of us said over the summer 'sure I'll be drinking loads of water, I'll be out walking every day, I won't gain over the summer...' How many are waiting till Halloween is over? Who else is thinking 'sure the year has been disaster, I might as well enjoy the rest of the year and start 100% in January 2018! Just you watch...'  Anyone? Yup me included! But the trick to begin healthy and happy is doing something about it NOW! Right now! Plan your shopping, write out a meal plan, decide to go for a walk at lunchtime and stick to it! Make your lunch this week, promise yourself, you're more than worth it! Organise your breakfast every night before bed, that 5 mins to plan, means that 7 of your meals this week will be on plan! Do it NOW!

NOW! Now is the time to look after you!

The 7 year itch?

Happy birthday Skinny Doll!

Nope it's not my birthday but the blogs birthday! Some time in September in 2010 I went public with my little blog. I had been posting before then but I didn’t have the balls to show anyone, let alone tell anyone what I was doing. I mean who did I think I was, blogging!?!? Notions much?! Did I have any clue what I was doing? NO… Did I know HOW to blog? NO… yet here I am 7 years later and I’m still at it… Why? Because I love it! I love most things about it… Most things… I have learned there are some things I have to leave to the techie people… Other things I just have to sit down and work out, even though I want to kill someone at the end of it (mostly the creators of blogger to be honest)... I know now, I can do a lot more than I realise. That my opinion (and I have MANY of those!), like it or not, has a place in the world… That I have a voice, I should use it sometimes… singing Proud Mary drunk in a lift is not one of those times, but you get me… So I’ve learned loads, so what? Anyone can learn loads right? True but what I’ve learned is MY experience of blogging and unique to me, crucial words in the land of bloggers… Unique to me! If at any point you feel like having go at me for any of these comments please go straight to point 3!

1. The best bloggers are passionate
about what they do…

They really are, you want to go back to their blog time and time again to see what they’ve posted and hear how they tell a story about something they love. You want to follow them on all the social media platforms… They are the people who you see on the street and think, I know what they had for breakfast but I have NO idea what they name is! You love following them as much as they love blogging! Think about your favourite author/director/artist… you engage with them as much as you can because of how they tell their story through whatever medium they use… You know and love how they see the world and you love it enough to keep going back for more, it’s the very same for blogging! Foodies, beauty, travel it’s all in how bloggers tell their story… I follow 4 beauty bloggers, I follow them because they love beauty products SO much and I love beauty stuff, that common ground draws me back to them time and time again… They all LOVE what they do, they are all very different in their approach, they all have full time jobs but the passion they have about beauty products is there to draw me back every single time… I will see if they’ve posted a pic of something new on Instagram, or if there’s a story on snapchat that I might be interested in… They do their research, they don’t fall in love with products once they fall out of the envelope and they all do blog posts on beauty products to steer clear of…  but bottom line, they LOVE what they do… Same with the foodies, they post recipes that are made with love, they rave about lettuce or chilli sauce, they take the time to take beautiful pictures (and I know that food is going cold!) that make me hungry and want to lick the screen… They make recipes that I think could try and with ingredients that mean I don’t have to drive 100 miles to get, but it’s passion and they are themselves, that’s what makes a good blogger. These bloggers show who they and post what they love on their little corner of the internet ... They don’t pretend to be something they’re not, THAT’S why people love them… They are unique, only they can do what they do, in the way they do it, with their flair! These bloggers are even passionate about engaging with their readers… They walk into a room and chat to everyone, chat with you online and engage with everyone who engages with them, they have a loyal following and they know THAT’S so important… Slapping up a blog post and expecting it to change the world without engaging with the people your talking to is just a waste of time… They know this! Engage with the groups on FB, interact with people on twitter who share your passion, follow the hashtags on instagram and find people who share your passion and just watch it grow…

2. Cliques are everywhere...

Even in the blogosphere! Yup, just like high school, you will get those lil ‘gangs’ who hang out together and bitch about others, but on the flip side, you’ll meet people who you would never have crossed paths with in the real world if you didn’t have blogging in common but like school not everyone is like this. In fact I found this in most walks of life you’ll get the cliques but you’ll also get those people who can stand alone and be themselves and not follow the crowd, these are the people you need to befriend in Blogland!  It’s OK to stand alone and be you… One of the best things for me has been meeting fellow bloggers and seeing the similarities of how they started their blogging journey compared to mine, there’s so much common ground no matter what topic you blog about and the camaraderie can be fantastic! I started my blog to document my weight loss journey, I have a lot of weight to lose, I was unemployed, depressed and at rock bottom, but I also started it to find other people to share the journey with and I have, thousands of them and they inspire and motivate me everyday to keep going… Sharing recipes, sharing eyeliner, sharing travel tips, it’s what it all boils down to and sharing these things in your unique way… being you is what makes your blog unique and how you carry yourself in the blogging arena speaks volumes… If you stand alone and do the work, your blog will speak for itself!

3. Remember those 3 little words...

Nope, not those three, although they’re lovely to hear too… these three >>> IN MY OPINION! Opinions are great, we all have them, some of us more than others, and honest open debates are great when you can recognise that you just don’t agree with something but you can respect that someone else does… Your opinion and how you write about them is what makes you unique, that’s exactly what makes you stand out… YOUR opinion! So stick with it, if you think a lipstick/saucepan/hotel is shite, then don’t flog it to your readers, stick to your guns and they’ll respect you for it I promise!

4. Don't be an 'influencer'...

Firstly, I detest the word! It's a made up word for companies to sell to their clients... Anyone has a problem with that opinion see 3. above! Unless my handbag is being robbed, I don’t part with my money easily! Secondly, see 1. above on passion! No one… I repeat NO ONE has ever made me part with my money in Penneys (Primark for the overseas readers), a restaurant or a hotel… As an adult I’m pretty sure I know how to spend my hard earned cash and never has a blogger ‘influenced’ me to part with it! Yes, I’ve learned about new products on the market or new restaurants that have opened but I’m not a ‘jump on the band wagon kinda gal’ … I’m not going to go to a restaurant because all the ‘cool kids’ say so… If you don’t like pizza (and if you don’t, what’s wrong with you?!) would you go to a pizza restaurant because a blogger said so?! Exactly! if you would then just stop reading now, we can't be friends. It’s just like my mum used say “If she jumped off a bridge would you follow her?!” … If you go to the opening of every envelope your readers will just get bored… I blog about the ups and downs of weight loss, the foods I love, plus size clothing, and recipes that are yummy which I don’t have to feel guilty about… If I put up a blog post about a lipstick, it will bomb. Now I love lipstick, I own many, many, MANY lipsticks and I often share the ones I love on instastories or post on instagram or maybe tweet them if someone asks what lippy I’m wearing in a pic, but its not what I blog about and it’s not why people read my posts… If i put up a blog post about ‘zero calorie wine’ it will be shared in groups for days (FYI when this wine exists I will be posting like a mofo!) … Know your audience, you built them with your content, so stay true to it!

I’ve been invited to some lovely events and other bloggers have questioned why I should be there when they weren’t invited yet they blog about fashion more than I do… You know the ‘well lucky you’ passive aggressive replies… Here’s just one example, I get invited to Penneys events because the majority of my followers are women losing (and gaining!) weight, they don’t want to spend a fortune on new clothes when they’re between sizes, so I share what’s coming down the line…They can aim to be a size smaller when the Christmas dresses come out and know that if they don’t get to that goal exactly what sizes they come in! Dear god, I’m not a fashionista but I know my audience and so do Penneys! If you go to every launch/event/invite that’s sent to you, it will backfire on you, in my opinion (see 3.!) … Yes, it’s lovely to be asked but I’ve found that if I turn down invites that just aren’t relevant to my readers with a email explaining why, I get a much better response from my readers and PR companies!

5. Don't worry about numbers...

‘Followers’… ‘fans’ … ‘stats’ … whatever you call them, the numbers don’t matter unless you’re in it to make a fortune… Liking other blogs for them to like back is fruitless, in my opinion (see 3!), you’ll never engage with them nor they with you, you’ll have a number to show a PR agency but zero engagement on your posts and the PR kids want to see engagement too… I’ve never asked anyone to follow me on social media, it’s been totally organic and that’s just how I like it, I spend so much time on FB & instagram interacting with people and THAT’S what makes it for me, the engagement… I’ve had bloggers tell me it’s easy for me to get numbers because what I blog about is niche… breaking news, it’s not! Have you seen how many weight loss blogs are out there!?!? But with over 1.2k live posts containing thousands of images, all taken by me, edited, considered, reconsidered, deleted, posted again and pained over, doesn’t make me lucky with the topic I chose to blog about, just means I work hard at it! The first night I realised there was someone on the blog 24/7 I completely freaked out… Firstly about grammar and spellings, then I lay there trying to sleep knowing there were WW groups in Australia liking & sharing my posts and wondering if they were getting my Irish sense of humour… freaking out I tell ya! I still freak out sometimes, I have full on panic attacks before blogging events, many times just not going because I don’t feel I’ve a right to be there but the confidence has grown slowly over the years. I even went to the blog awards alone last year, a HUGE deal for me and I loved it! I’ve learned to stand over what I write, what I share and how I feel about topics, and that was a big learning curve… The amount of followers I have has had nothing to do with any of this, and that won't change, it's just a number and it doesn't make you a better blogger or a better writer or a better person... If you have 100 loyal followers who love what you do and engage with you, you’re doing much better than someone with 100k followers who is getting a couple of likes on a picture!

6. Don't feed the trolls

Not even the cute ones! We've heard it a million times and its SO hard not to engage with the feckers, but trolls need air and attention! If you give it to them they’re winning. Trust me I’ve had some beauties over the years, the fat shaming trolls are out there in their droves but my strategy with them is passive aggressive. I might as well enjoy getting the hits on the posts since they’ve nothing else better to do, I mean don’t these people have laundry?! So a simple ‘thumbs up’ emoji or a ‘thanks for visiting the page today’ seems to kill them dead… Yes, it’s hard to read horrible things about you but that’s what they want and for every gobshite who is jealous or annoyed with you because they think you have ‘notions’, (I can’t tell you how many times I’ve said ‘who do you think you are?!” to myself!) you have 100 readers who want to hear more and THAT’S who you need to focus on… They will come back for more, the trolls won’t!

7. It's hard work!

If you're a blogger you already know this... but once you commit to it, and you don’t have to, it’s your corner of the internet, what you do it there is up to you. Don’t want to blog about beauty any more? Then don’t and follow your passion, be a bricklayer, but if you really love it, it can be incredibly rewarding… I’ve interacted with people all over the world on the same journey as me, I’ve had the privilege of seeing people reach their weight loss goals and I’ve been able to understand people when they feel like giving up… I’ve been in Weight Watchers classes around the world, I’ve done 10ks and 5ks that I never thought I’d ever do… I’ve met some of my blogging heroes and I’ve learned that maybe I’m alright at this writing lark (something I always wanted to do in school but I’m an only child with very controlling parents)… I’m 8 stone lighter, I still have a lot left to lose and the many times I’ve thought about giving up (MANY MANY TIMES!) I’m glad I didn’t! (Please refer me to this post when I’m wearing my doubting Thomas knickers next time!) … but even when I’m tired after work, I’ll still come home and think what can I do on the blog today, when I’m out in the supermarkets I’ll be taking pics for a blog post, when I’m in a restaurant I’ll be asking if they do brunch so I can do a post for brunch club, it’s more than a hobby for me now, and when I win the euromillions, I’ll be able to do it all the time... I can spend hours agonising over images, editing paragraphs with my pool boy to bring me gin… People think it’s just a simple case of taking a picture and writing a few words, but it’s so much more…  it’s time consuming and hard work but worth it if you’re passionate! (see 1. above!)
