A funny thing happened on the way to the office...

I was sent for the coffee run and whilst standing in the queue in Starbucks I spotted the word 'Slimbo' ... 'Ooooh' says I... 'that might be a good option for lunch if I get stuck.. I wonder how many ProPoints are in that??' I mumbled ... so whilst waiting for the Mocha/latte/skinny 'NO SUGAR'/'will-you-get-me-a-bar-of-chocolate?' list to be filled... I snapped all the sandwiches that were there and pointed them back at my desk... BRACE yourselves...

Ham & Cheese Slimbo - 7PP (SEVEN!)
It's tiny... two mouthfuls at best... well maybe my mouthfuls but still!

Smoked Salmon and Rocket Slimbo - 6PP

Ham Salad Bap - 11PP
ELEVEN and look at the size of it in my hand!!!

Veggie Good Houmous wrap - 10PP

BBQ pulled pork tortilla - 13PP

Sweet Chilli Chicken Ciabatta - 11PP

Ham and Cheese Please - 14PP
FOURTEEN!!!!

Goats cheese and moroccan styled veg tasca - 12PP

Smoked cheddar and spinach tasca - 13PP

Ham sambo - 8PP

Sure as eggs is eggs - 11PP ELEVEN!!!

I'll stop shouting now... seriously though, there are many days when I would have happily picked one up and thought 'I'm not doing much harm with a 'slimbo'!'

One thing to note, there's no fibre posted on their packaging... I have contacted them and am waiting for a reply but till then... be careful out there!!

Meet & Meat

Veggies look away now... Carnivores get your knife and fork out... OK not really...

Recently I was in town after 'Chicks with Sticks' (the new name for crochet club... I'm so OLD!) ... and was meeting a fellow carnivore for lunch! Say hello to 'Meet & Meat'... remember Munchies, on the corner of Sth William street... that's where its at!

Meet & Meat make sandwiches... amazing sandwiches... you can have a take away or sit in...
tip.. if you're sitting in grab a window seat, it's an awesome spot to people watch... especially at the weekend...

They open for breakfast serving 'egg and bacon butties', 'the breakfast hot dog' which I'm going back for... as well as pastries and cookies if you just want a coffee and a sit down..

For lunch they serve a fab selection of sandwiches which are not by any means stingy and well worth the prices they charge... there's no comparison to these and something  you grab on the run from a Spar... One of these bad boys and you're set up for the day! In the evenings they do wine, cheese boards, charcuterie and fancy breads with all the trimmings for €9 - €10 ...

'M' had the roast special of the day which was 'Brisket' and dear god, there was enough meat for three people in it!

By the time we got there, there was only one special left, so I went with the chicken and stuffing but we swapped at half time and they were both equally yummy!

Chicken with sage stuffing... garlic mayo on the side to add at your leisure...

Tea and coffee is on tap too, all the usual lattes, cappuccino kinda stuff but the sunny day that was in it, I went for some fancy San Pellegrino ... swanky huh?!

The vibe of the place is relaxed.. you walk up to the counter.. order and grab a seat... when you hear your name shouted grubs up!

The 'roast of the day' is on view and the smells... all the noms!

The interior is great too.. white tiles, bricked walls and the cured hams hanging in the window add to the place... The butchers block tables just add to the theme... you can put your elbows on the tables here and relax... and you'll need to, to balance your sandwich!

If you're in town and you really want a meal of a sandwich at lunchtime... this is the spot... and veggies, they do have yummy things for you too the 'Where's the Meat?' wrap looked amazing!

Prawn Satay recipe...

Here's the recipe for the Prawn satay as promised from Friday … Part of my ongoing homemade Chinese experiment!

I LOVE satay.. and a chicken satay from my local Chinese is 18 (EIGHTEEN!!!) ProPoints… and a skewered chicken satay from the starter is 5 PP for ONE! so I had to do something… after many attempts this is the best I've come up with… don't forget to add your rice…  10g = 1 PP

First up you'll need prawns, you can use chicken or beef too… Most of the packs you buy all work out roughly 3 PP for about 12 prawns…

Birds Eye 280gm pack = 5 PP
Young's King Prawns 190gm pack = 3 PP

Frozen 250g bag from Tescos = 3 PP for half the bag

Get those in the hot wok with a few squirts of spray oil and lash in loads of veg… add some soy sauce, sweet chill sauce and a drop of red wine vinegar… Try a little lemon grass or Chinese five spice if that's your thing… I used red bell peppers, courgettes and red onions all finely chopped… but you can add any veg you like… mushrooms are lovely and will bulk it up too!

The satay sauce works out at 2 PP and will serve 4

You'll need…
2 tbsp smooth or crunchy peanut butter

2 tbsp creme fraiche
(the recipe used coconut milk or evaporated milk but creme fraiche does the exact same job without the extra saturated fat!)

1 tsp canderel
(I've found this to be optional… it you caramelize your onions it can be sweet enough)

1 tsp sweet chilli sauce

1 small onion finely chopped

1 clove of garlic crushed

2 tsp soy sauce

2 tsp lemon juice

1/2 cup water

Then…

Combine the onion, garlic, sauces, sugar, lemon juice, peanut butter and water in a small saucepan then bring to the boil. Simmer the mixture for about 5 minutes continuously stirring or until the sauce thickens. Allow it to cool slightly then stir in creme fraiche. You can thin it down with a little more water and then add it to your stir fry.

Et voila!

6 PP of prawns and 2 PP of sauce makes a large portion of this for just 4 PP
just add your rice…

The lowest ready-made packet satay sauce is from AMOY…
6 PP for the full packet which serves two
but its full of flavor so you will easily get 3 dinners out of it…
I found it a little thick so I water it down… Most of the rest are ridiculously high!

Enjoy!

Happy new year…

I know it's only Tuesday and the weekend seems like AAAAAAGGGGGGGGEEEEEEESSSS away… but who here loves they're weekly take out?!? go on… fess up! Big friends of Mao and the local Chinese in Casa Doll!

Friday is Chinese New Year… the year of the horse… and funnily enough that's how I eat my chinese… I horse it down! Chopsticks are the best way of eating and probably the most frustrating for ambidextrous people! But chasing a pepper around your plate will give your stomach time to digest what you've eaten and for your brain to realize you're actually full!

Portion control is the one to watch as every Chinese is different… but with a little common sense and you can have your favs without the guilt…

More noodles and Asian foods coming this week!

so, here's what you're looking at for those of you pointing…

Chinese...
Beef with green pepper in black bean sauce = 12 pp
Boiled rice = 12 pp
Char Sui Pork = 11 pp
Chicken chow mein = 9 pp
Chicken & cashew nuts = 9 pp
Chicken in black bean Sauce = 11 pp
Chicken with mushroom = 8 pp
Chicken and sweetcorn soup = 6 pp
Chicken Balls (portion of 8) = 13 pp
Chips - half bag (210g) = 14 pp
Chips point at 24pp for a whole bag,
I weigh mine out 210g = 14 pp, 400/420g = 26/27 pp
Curry Sauce (per tub) = 8 pp
Egg fried rice = 16 pp
Fortune Cookies (per cookie) = 2 pp
Hot and Sour Soup = 4 pp
Lemon chicken = 10 pp
Lychees (6) = 0 pp
Mushroom Chow Mein = 6 pp
Mushroom Foo Yung = 6 pp

Sweet and sour chicken (balls or peking style) = 13 pp

Be very careful with Chinese values, do not treat them like Mcdonalds points which are standard sizes. e.g. in my local Chinese I would get 10 chicken balls, each at least twice the size as a Mcdonalds chicken nugget, and then with sweet and sour sauce on top there is no way they are 13pp if 9 nuggets are 11pp.

A special chow mein in one chinese could be approx 850g and serve 2, so it can't be the same value as a single spring roll! let common sense prevail!!

THAI!

I'm back! Technology has not beaten me and my little 'puter is finally up to date with the rest of you!

I've had a request from one of the Dolls on twitter for the Pro-points values on Thai food...

Now, Thai cooking includes plenty of fresh vegetables, fish and lean meat; lightly spiced with fragrant ingredients such as lemon grass, coriander and fresh chillies. At a Thai restaurant you'll find plenty to suit, as many of the dishes are chargrilled and steamed.

If you've got only a few ProPoints values to use: Start with a hot and sour soup such as tom yum goong with prawns or chargrilled seafood or a seafood salad. Follow with a jungle curry (kaneng par) that's spicy and meaty. or a lightly steamed fish such as sea bream or sea bass. You'll have plenty of side salad options such as som tum, or som tam, a green papaya salad with a lime dressing. Plain fragrant jasmine rice suits most dishes and is a healthier choice than coconut.

If you have a few more ProPoints values to spare: Start with steamed rice noodle spring rolls stuffed with vegetables or seafood. Then chargrilled strips of beef - nueasun yang or lok luk steak, with its garlicky sauce, which goes well with steamed pak choi.

Avoid: fried prawn crackers (krupuk), the fried noodles, which are listed as 'dry' and the crispy options as these will also have been fried. Fried is NOT our friend!

Also, check out my Welsh counterpart and quite the skinny foodie Miss Weight Watch! She whipped up these delish thai burgers, I've tried them and they are NOM! Check her out HERE!

Another recipe for the chefs amongst us - is Thai coconut soup! HERE!

I'll post all these values in the 'take away' list on the right too  >>>>>>
and remember to use some common sense!

Happy New Year!!!! (No really!)

Happy Chinese new year everyone... and 2011 is the year of the rabbit - yes I laughed too.. if all I ate was carrots for the rest of the year I'd be ProPoint free!!! (and probably a light shade of orange!)

A famous Chinese proverb which comes to mind is...

Everyone eats and drinks; yet only few appreciate the taste of food.

... and it is SO true... that clever Confucius!! How many times have I HOOVERED a chinese take out thinking it was the last time I'd ever eat one!!! sigh... Chinese food is delicious and can be a fab treat when enjoyed with friends.. but the trick is to savour it! Take your time and really enjoy the flavours! I also think when it comes to eating out..... Just use common sense.....choose the healthiest option..

A lot of Chinese restaurants tend serve the meat and sauce in one dish, while the rice/noodles come seperately, pick out the meat and place it with your rice/noodles, then with a spoon dish out 2 - 3 spoons of sauce over your meat. The servers are ALWAYS coming over to ask if everything is to your liking, just ask them to take away the excess sauce. If it's not there....you wont eat it and while your waiting for your food to come out.....drink loads of water... it'll fill you up! Stay away from the prawn crackers!

Split portions too....one meat and sauce portion between two portions of rice...

Every restaurant is slightly different, with different recipes and portions....its just IMPOSSIBLE to point them accurately.

These days restaurants aren't that busy, I'm not even going to START about the recession ....they won't mind you asking how a dish is cooked. Remember you (or someone who loves you, ya lucky duck!!) is paying for it!

Below is a list of some of the goodies you can indulge in... if like me you don't use your extra weekly 49 PPs so you can have a treat or share some with friends...

(these will be listed on the takeout page too! >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>)

PIZZA....

Pizza is one of the ultimate fast foods – it’s quick, it’s tasty, it’s a whole meal in one. It can be a high ProPoints value option. Use the information below, and check out how choosing a different pizza base can make all the difference and some low ProPoints value options when you’re eating out.

Per Slice

Domino's: Cheese & Tomato, medium crust = 4pp
Domino's: Chicken Feast, thin crust = 5pp
Domino's: Americano, thin crust = 7pp
Domino's: Meateor, regular crust = 7pp

Pizza Express: Margherita, sixth of whole pizza = 3pp
Pizza Express: Quattro Formaggi, sixth of whole pizza = 3pp

TOP TIPS
Practise Piling On
Go for colourful toppings of fresh vegetables such as green, red or yellow peppers, broccoli or tomato slices. But be aware that some pizza restaurants sauté their vegetable toppings in oil. Make sure to ask and add any extra ProPoints values for the oil, if necessary, or ask them to cook the vegtables in an alternative way.

Ditch The Crust
The crust-leavers of the world have the right idea. Most regular pizza crusts are made of enriched white flour, so if your local pizzeria offers a wholegrain crust, it's a wiser choice.

If you're going for the home made option, all you need is a flat tortilla wrap... passata sauce and GO FOR IT!! Loads of peppers, mushrooms, tomatoes, garlic, onion.. plenty of 0pp veg, (tip - fry your onions in a non stick pan to soften them first) ... Want to add some meat - use the wafer think ham for volume if you like ham, chicken sausages grilled and sliced on top are yum, turkey bacon is another good choice. For the cheese lovers - low low cheese and grate it really finely you'll get more cheese for your buck! Laughing cow extra light can be used but you need to spread it on your base BEFORE you add your tomatoes, it gives that cheese flavour without all those extra points.
