#TBT

I can clearly remember the evening 'I did it!' ... and here's the thing, I wasn't overwhelmed with emotion, there were no tears on my part, in fact I was trying to dodge the attention... My best pal was in tears on the phone but I just couldn't see the success I had achieved. My face says it all, do we really need to do this? (I'm so grateful we did BTW!) Could we wait until I reach goal? All I could think was 'I still had so much more to lose...' Don't get me wrong I was happy that I was 10 stone lighter than when I started, but it really was just a number to me.

Three weeks after this photo I was on a flight to Gatwick and as was my usual habit, I asked the air hostess for a belt extension as I boarded the plane. She asked for my seat number and said she'd drop it down to me. I slid into the window seat, a seat I always chose because then I was only inconveniencing one fellow passenger and I could lean into the window if they were annoyed with my size (the mind games I play with myself are VERY real!) Fortunately I was with a friend that day and as we sat in our seats, the pilot announced we were on the inaugural flight for this plane, a brand spanking new plane and the only noise in my head was 'UGH and I'll be the first to wear a belt extension on it!' As my pal got ready to belt up, she had mixed up the buckles from the aisle seat with her and when she clasped it together, it was as extended as far as it could go. She leaned in to me and whispered 'I think this will close on you!'... I pretty much growled at her with a daggers look and said 'seriously?!...' but in preparation for the extension belt coming, I had pulled my belt out to its maximum and the two ends met, and closed... what followed was what can only be described as floodgates... The airhostess was so kind, leaning over to say she hadn't forgotten me to which my pal told her 'I've got this...' and she did bless her... I sobbed all the way to London.

That feeling, that feeling of being "normal" whatever the definition of that is, was unreal. The anxiety of asking for the belt extension starts hours before I even leave the house but now I'd never have to ask for an extension belt again. I've never have to wonder if the crew would be kind (I have many stories where they haven't been...), I'd never have to endure dirty looks from passengers 'stuck' beside me (again SO many tales to tell!) but this was what mattered so much more to me.. the number on the scales was just one thing to help me get there but that feeling, the feeling that millions of people know nothing about, of just fitting into a space was unbelievable. Just think of the millions of people getting on a flight today and the seat belt has never ever crossed their mind, like ever! That's what I want.

But without the scales I wouldn't have achieved that loss. I have gained back 3 of the 10 stone I've lost. Pandemic, isolation and the full realisation that I cannot do this alone has had me thinking so much about what was different back then, why can't I do what I did back then? What's missing? I realised it's who I surrounded myself with, it's the online community who really get it. It's that class in Harolds Cross and the amazing people in it, and I needed to find that again. Life moves on and things change but we all have the power to surround ourselves with people who really care and understand. They might just be one person in a class but they've got your back, not just when they need you, but all the time.

I'm not back at the start line. This is something to celebrate. I'm not happy about the weight gain but didn't we all just survive a global pandemic?!?! I've been poorly since the end of last October and I've been putting together the pieces of what has been missing for me. What was SO different back then, I was losing every week. I was so focussed! What did I have then that I don't have now?

A weekly class - I need accountability, I need to face the scales and have someone be a cheerleader for me. Not someone who is going to be stunned at the number on the scales and let me walk away in tears! Not someone who doesn't understand what it means to be so unhappy in their body. I need a cheerleader. Someone on my side. And it doesn't matter what plan it is, if you're in a group of people who motivate and inspire you and get you, then it's for you... bites, syns, points, calories it really doesn't matter, as long as it works for you.

I need to believe in myself. The self doubt it very real right now. Yes I've gained some back but I'm human and it's hard. This is one I'm gonna have to fake it until I make it!

I need to find a group of like minded people who want to talk about the 'WHY' ... People who chat about mindset and where our headspace is at and the reasons why we think about food in certain ways and maybe solutions to fixing them or at least managing them better without all the mental exhaustion. My relationship with food and unwanted weight has been decades long and whilst I won't solve anything overnight, talking to people about why we think that way and breaking old habits is a game changer!

I need to track and meal plan. I do that for the whole week, that suits me. It doesn't always go to plan when there's leftovers or something is about to go off in the fridge and it won't suit everyone but it's right for me. I need to stay away from people who make me feel bad about my journey. It's not wrong for me if it's working for me! Same with the blog, this is my little space on the internet, I'm proud of it. It's not my job, it's somewhere people can come and share. Share good and bad things, put up recipes they love, tips they've heard and it doesn't matter what plan they are doing. It's respectful. I only started it as a space to put up the points of things so I'd remember what they were because WW Ireland didn't have the app most of us could get through changing the location of out iphone location... ugh! But here it is, somewhere people are happy to share their journeys with me and I love that so much.

So this 'Throwback Thursday' is remembering what's successful for you, what works for you. This is your body and your path in life. If Slimming World works - do it, if it's Unislim - go for it, if you're doing ProPoints or counting calories or just being mindful - YOU DO YOU!

The journey continues... and if the word journey bothers you, you're in the wrong part of the internet!

There's an app for that!

You say it best...

I just watched Amy Schumer being interviewed by a radio station in Melbourne for her new movie...  (just google 'Amy Melbourne KIIS interview' you'll get it!), in which one of the presenters clearly offends Amy by his comments on her new movie, and she called him out on it... It got me thinking about how you react to negativity... and it comes it ALL shapes and forms... but your reaction will have an impact on you... and how you feel about you... and no one has the right to make you feel bad just by going about your day... Life is hard enough...

A jealous sibling, a parent who doesn't get it.. a friend who thinks 'you're GRAND the way you are...' Sometimes it's the people you least expect... It also comes from a strangers... I've had my fair share of comments from random stranger who believe they have a right to comment on me as I go about my day being a good citizen of the world... honestly with 8.5 stone gone and another 6+ to go I was BIG girl... but it didn't mean I should be a target for abuse.. and I was... I still am... kids just say what they like, 'look at that HUGE lady over there' ... they're hurtful little feckers who think they're funny but are easily put into place... They're mean to each other, tall kids, short kids you name it... once someone is 'different' or not they're version of 'normal' then they're fair game... we all remember the bullies in school... it's up to the parents to nip that in the bud!

Old people, the same... 'during the war we didn't have enough food to get that fat...' Followed but the killer 'but you're doing so well... such a pretty face...' Next time bring in our own wheelie bin lady!

Now before you think I'm going around shouting abuse at the children and elderly, I'm not... but I no longer believe in ignoring comments aimed at me... if I'm fair game, so is the next person they meet... If I'm the person to put a stop to them then I'll wear that t-shirt with pride! Like I said, if someone, anyone, is prepared to make a comment about me and how I look, then they must expect a response... Here's a few that I have perfected... feel free to use them when you need em!

Excuse me, but did you actually just say that?
This one shames the shamer... and I'm not about making other people feel bad but a taste of their own medicine really doesn't hurt... plus if you've got the cahoonas to say something then you should be able to stand by it and explain it...  so question them... stop dead and look em in the eye and say it... watch em squirm...

So sorry I wasn't listening... Could you repeat that please?
I love this one... being a bully isn't so funny the second time around... especially if it was said for effect... if they're playing to the crowd, the crowd doesn't laugh so hard at the same joke twice... you'll find a lot of mumbling when you do this... just end it with an 'I thought as much...'

You don't really expect me to answer that do you?
The higher road beckons you... just let them know that's where you'll be! With humans who have IQs higher than goldfish...

I really don't know how to answer that...
This one comes after the 'death stare' ... look at them... tilt your head... a la Amy... ponder for a moment... THEN say it... practice it, it's VERY empowering!

Right...
This is all in the pronunciation... 'RIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT...' follow it up with a little sigh... end it with a ...

Whatever you say...
This screams of 'I just don't have the time, energy or inclination for you right now...' 'Unlike you I've got too much to do and TOO little time to do it!'

You're kidding, right?!? hold on... you ARE kidding, right?
I may recall I used this technique to give some helpful tips to some taxi drivers... >>> HERE <<<

Yup, I think we've reached the end of this conversation..
Ouch! Did you mean to be that rude?!
I think that was a bit rude..
All winners... call it like it is...

I'm actually offended by that comment...
Depends on who said it, this is for someone you know, your nearest and dearest can sometimes be the most hurtful, thinking they're 'helping' but you need to remind them you're not a personal project and you have feelings too!

I'm sure you didn't MEAN for that question/comment to be
rude/ intrusive/inappropriate, but that's how it sounded
These are good for the oldies... I think there is a generation out there who just think it's OK to say anything cause they're old... they also think they can park anywhere and get away with it... but that's a WHOLE other post!

Help me understand why you think that was an appropriate thing to say -
and why you think I should answer you
The 'kill em with kindness' response... Head tilt... Sad eyes... 'teach me oh wise one...'
'I just want to help you to heal' tone - think Miss America Pageant

Thank you.. we're all refreshed and challenged by your unique point of view...

If in doubt... in your poshest accent...
My apologies... I don't speak English...

No one has the right to make you feel bad... and if you call them out on it, you may just spare someone else feeling miserable in the future... plus, you'll feel SO empowered... bullies don't know where you've been, how much you've lost, how hard it can be... they see an easy target and most think they can get away with it, and usually they do... not anymore folks... not any more!

Arnotts Autumn/Winter 2015

I know it's only July... but it it's time to start thinking about the winter gear... and going by the weather today... its probably going to be here sooner rather than later! And remember I'm a glass half full kinda gal...

I was at the Arnotts Autumn Winter 2015 launch in the Hugh Lane Gallery last week and winter doesn't look so bleak! I thought I'd share what looks are in the pipeline...

The colour themes for the season ahead are 'Autumn Leaves' think golds, dark chocolate browns, pretty rust colours, caramels, burnt oranges and creams; 'Red Red Wine' - deep burgundy, plums, clarets and 'Grapevine' - plums, purples and rich dark damsons! Grey is one of the 'core' base colours so we're not all head to toe in black...

Style wise, the 70s vibe is still here so capes / caplets and faux fur are in... as are over sized knitwear *fistbumps* Best part of winter is covering the lumps and bumps is cozy knits with flattering A line skirts and pencil skirts celebrating the curves we wanna show off! ... It's all about looking cosy and warm, layer up your textures... and adding a touch of sexy with leather, velvet and brocade textures...

Hats are in... very pretty hats are in!!!
Teamed with a classic mac, they're perfect for the autumn look...

How every gal should style her mantelpiece!

My fav look of the day... goal outfit anyone?!

Pops of golden yellow in accessories...

and look at the break nibbles! mmmmmmmmm!

This caramel Coach bag caught my eye... Santa... if you're reading... thanks!

Cozzies!

Yup... holidays are coming.. and I don't mean the Coca Cola truck! Swimwear... lets be having ya!

Every magazine and article is wondering if we're all 'beach body ready!' sigh... to quote one of my favourite people...

OK so getting your kit off at home in the dark in the privacy of your own home is bad enough... but when you're away and you have to get your bits out you just want to be wearing something that's flattering and comfortable!  We can't all fit into a bikini from Pennys/Primark but there are some fab cozzies out there that will bring out your best bits! So this week, here's what available from Simplybe.ie

So... if your boobs are fab... go for a support / wired top... halter neck can be very flattering and make sure it plunges... if you got em... flaunt em! Plus we all know they distract from a wobbly tum and thighs...

If your legs are good... high cut leg on the bottoms... these ones from have little cords at the side so you be as brave as you like... also you can adjust the fold along the waist to cover as much or as little as you want! Plus... look at the colour!!! So nice to get away from black especially when you're away in the sun...

If you're conscious of your tummy... a tankini is the way forward... you might even roll it up a little, once you realise you're not the only human with a tummy at the pool! G'wan ya tease!

Another tip for the belly wobbles is to go retro! Hit it up like Marilyn Monroe with some 50s style briefs and don't forget the accessories!

Plus a matching cover up for those trips to the mojito bar... what!?!?
If you smiled you're as guilty as I am!

and if you're like me... and fear the general public in general... get a swim dress... you can skip in and out of the pool, and on your sun lounger without fretting about anything... these are SO flattering and will give you ALL the confidence you need pool side

The trick with swimwear is to know your shape... and what your best bits are...
them mix and match to show em off!

If you're looking for a 'sporty / surfer chick' look, this is one for messing down at the beach!
Tussle your hair LOTS in this!

The contrast piping on this sexy number is very flattering! Plus did you SEE the mesh bit?! HOT!

All these are available from Simplybe.ie online...
so don't be stuck for something cute to bring on your holidays!
