My birds aren't fat...

The birds in my garden aren't fat... they're very well fed... in fact they're pretty spoiled! I feed them in the morning whilst I'm boiling the kettle... I buy them nuts and seeds... I hang up tasty little balls of suet fat for them, where neither the magpies nor the neighbours cat can get at them... they have a fresh bird bath ever week... and for the winter the BBQ becomes a runway for my feathered friends... in fact I have a little robin who is getting a little demanding right now.... and isn't one bit afraid of me! Chirping away in protest when something isn't to his liking!

But he's not fat.. despite having a full buffet in front of him every day... he knows when to stop!

He fluffs about all day ... chirping ... sometimes just sits on the fence in the morning sun with his eyes closed which I just love to see ... he has his own little routine and it's fascinating to watch, but he knows how to stop eating when he's full... he listens to his body... Something he is teaching me!

It's WAY to easy to be over weight these days, that's not an excuse, convenience food has been the demise of our health... it's cheaper to buy 4 large sausage rolls at the deli counter than a punnet of fruit... we can eat strawberries in December, which taste NOTHING like the ones ripened by the sun in the summer and not bat an eyelid... Life is so much faster now... not so long ago, everyone had seasonal fruit and veggies... for a reason.. they're fresher... cheaper... they taste better... anything that has to be forced in a greenhouse and fed isn't in it natural form...

My birds are very picky.. took me ages to work out why some weren't eating certain nuts whilst the blackbirds devoured them.. they only eat what is good for them.. they only eat what they need... and in winter its kinda tough so my little bird house just helps them along, but it's not a binge-fest!

Maybe if we listened to our bodies more.. took a day off from 'DEAR GOD IT'S 1PM I MUST HAVE LUNCH!' and had lunch when we were actually hungry and ate what we really, REALLY wanted... just listened to our bodies, no one would be on a diet! We don't really want chocolate.. our bodies have been conditioned to want chocolate, especially my generation... TV dinners were magic when I was a kid.. space food no less! But my mum always had stew in winter.. salads in summer... and because money was tight junk food didn't feature in my diet until I had to fend for myself!

I recently read a book by Michael Pollan about 'Food Rules'... and it's something my grandmother could have told you... only eat what is in season... if something has an ingredient you can pronounce it's not suppose to be in your body... anything with more than 5 ingredients isn't fresh and is officially called 'processed' .. how many of our grannies had processed food? and this is less than 50 years ago... Chocolates were a treat, not a daily snack to keep our energy up... coffee wasn't on tap... maybe today be like the birds and listen to what your body needs and wants...

Tomorrow... tomorrow... I love ya...

You totally sang that....

Tomorrow is a wonderful place isn't it... housework will be done... filing will be done... diets start.... junk food ends.. it's only a fabulous day... but if you put off starting to exercise until the time is right, you'll never reach your fitness goals... There is NEVER a right time... EVER!

Q. When is the best time to start exercising?

Monday morning?
New Year's Day?
The beginning of the month?
After your holidays?
When you can afford a gym membership?

All tried and tested excuses... you heard me...

A. The best time to start exercising is NOW.
If you keep waiting for the perfect time to start working out, or for the ideal time to change our eating habits, we risk procrastinating and waiting for a time that may never come.

We're all busy... and there's never be a perfect time to start...

If you want to achieve your goals... start now...

because NOW is always the best time to make YOU a priority.

Honest 2 Goodness - H2G

I love a good market... food... flea... vintage... I'm one of those people who could spend all day having a good nosey around at stuff... and I'm a regular to my local food markets... I believe in supporting local growers... I always try to buy Irish if the option is there... and in my opinion things just taste better...

Every Saturday in Glasnevin the Honest 2 Goodness market is open from 9:30 till 4pm and everything in there is delicious... you can buy your breakfast lunch and dinner there, plus a pot of flowers to cheer yourself up! Plus there's a fab little cafe just beside it to sit down and enjoy your purchases!

If you're an olive fan you'll get weak when you walk in the door.. stuffed with garlic and cheeses... the pesto is amazing and you can have a little taste of everything before you buy, so go hungry!

For unusual things you might not find in your local supermarket ... you'll get it here and if not they'll happily try to get it for you!

There's cronuts... and doughnuts... and chocolate... and cookies and all the bad stuff so don't go thinking you'll head home with just a head of lettuce and a tub of pesto!

There's cronuts...

did I mention there were c
ronuts...

In every conceivable flavour! I'll stop now...

an entire stand of oats to choose from...

I know I said I'd stop but I mean look!!! Dublin Cookies!!!

It's a real treasure trove for 'foodies' and normal folk like you and me...

And... if you do the circuit the way I do (like the way I made that sound like exercise!) ... I head straight for the pesto stand then go clockwise... you've saved the best for last with Arun Bakery from Stoneybatter are sitting there on the way out the door! dear god... I bought the chilli bread for Sunday Brunch and the smell in the car home was just awesome! Sourdoughs, granary, good old fashioned batch... Their bread is amazing and you know my thinking... if you're going to eat something ... have the best you can.. it's quality over quantity for me...

Baskets of bread rolls to tempt you on the way out the door...

Chilli bread!!! I mean I tell ya... you couldn't be up to them...

The guy outside making stone baked pizzas is a bit awesome too but you didn't hear that from me! ahem... If you're in the area on a Saturday, check them out... You'll find them online >>> HERE <<<

Seasons... Weigh in #6

My back garden looks like I have green fingers!

Spring has sprung and decided to feck off back to the cave for a while... May is effectively so far.. rubbish...

The world runs on seasons… Summer means holidays… swim suits… Winter for cuddling up and hibernating … Spring wakes us up a bit… a bit…  Christmas… Easter… back to school … the calendar year is divided up so that just when you think you’re ready to start… something else is on the horizon!

The thing is… this healthy eating lark is for all year round and sometimes we use bank holidays… easter… a confirmation… a wedding to ‘start again’ … it’s a mentality that you’ve just got to get and I think I’m slowly getting there… how many times have we said.. ‘sure look we’ll have a blast and enjoy ourselves and we’ll start again next week/Monday/when we get home’… our bodies have no clue what season it is.. they get cold… hot… hungry… thirsty… sore… energised… tired… and … wait for the cliche… food is just fuel … I know! I know! its taken me YEARS to get this... AND why can’t cream cakes and pizza be fuel anyways!??! groan…

We’ve only got one body…  it’s our responsibility to take care of it… no one ties you down and force feeds you chips on a Saturday night…  and no one is saying you can’t have chips on a Saturday night... or not have a good time and be ‘norma-no-mates-I’m-doing-weight-watchers’ in the corner… but you know when you’ve overdone it, you feel sluggish… it effects your skin… your mood… and you know what you have to do… but sometimes it’s easier to ignore your body and tell yourself that soon… soon, you’ll be back on track…  and emotional eating is the root of many problems… For years I treated my body like a rubbish bin… bingeing.. purging... bingeing again.. a vicious cycle... wondering why the reflection in the mirror was so hideous… I still struggle to look in the mirror… emotional eating has taken its toll on me… and there are days …even after losing nearly 7 stone when I think I just can’t do it… and i feel like enough is enough and I'm never going to be where I want to be...

The ‘seasons’ will continue… Next January… the shelves will be heaving with Easter eggs… birthdays will happen every year… and yes.. have a slice of cake but be kind to your body… nourish it… and it will repay you… that karma lark really works…

This week I was down 2.5lbs! After all the ‘cowboy’ shenanigans over the bank holiday…  I honestly had no idea how it was going to go but I knew I had made good choices… I’m learning to make better decisions… I’m sharing treats… OK so I didn’t share the 99 but I mean that’s just ridiculous! Before we got to the main event.. I made sure I had eaten something that I knew would get me past the chicken wings, bread and coleslaw… I took control … I still had loads of fun ...  I had a few diet drinks amidst the gin… not enough to stop a massive hangover (twice!) but still it could have been a million times worse!

A super long walk on the beach… line dancing (I’m reviving that by the way!) lots of fruit and water all helped… I made a decision before I got there to only have the breakfast grill on one day even though it was there for free all weekend, wafting about all bacon-esque… but the alternatives were just too yummy to miss out on and I knew I'd feel so much better eating healthier... and as soon as I got on the scales I was SO glad I behaved!

Even when I got on the plane it was water and fruit… I just wanted to feel better in my skin again… and that comes with time… years of doing weight watchers has changed my palette.. even full fat milk tastes funny now! Think of your lifetime as the seasons… where are you now? Summer…autumn… Late spring… your body needs to last you all the way through to winter and fuelling it the right way will mean just that… so…

Here’s what seasonal fruit and veggies are up for May… these bad boys will be cheap as they’re gonna get at this time of year ALDI are doing some great deals at the moment in veg!

okra
courgettes
aubergines
rhubarb
artichokes
asparagus
spring peas
broccoli
lettuce
baby spinach
leeks
cabbage
cauliflower
new potatoes
scallions/spring onions

cherries
pineapples
apricots

Courgette is a personal fav of mine.. the Skinny Mum grows it and we overdose every year, like we get hives kind of overdose!

Jamie Olivers nifty way to make Courgette penne’ can half your points and it tastes SO good! Here's a diagram that I .. *coughs* stole... things I do for you people!

Courgette penne

Jamie cuts penne shaped courgette…

I could only find this version online but skip to 1:28 to see how he cuts up the courgette… sneaky little beggar! Just shows we eat with our eyes and if you got a plate of this mixed with half of your usual pasta you’re digestive system would high five you and you could half the propoints for you pasta... more wine anyone?!

Also… courgette spaghetti… dear god try this! I make mine.. steam it for 2-3 minutes and pour your sauce and meatballs on top… DELISH!!!

Courgette spaghetti how I make it…

The other hero in the supermarkets at the moment is rhubarb…. and I mean who doesn’t love a crumble!!! I just stew it in a little diet 7up and use it on my breakfast… a few tablespoons stirred into porridge… swoon…

Here’s the WW version for 3PP and the portion is HUGE!

And here’s two fab rhubarb recipes from one of my favourite cooking site www.skinnytaste.com

aaaannnndddd.. last one... here’s a fab recipe for cabbage.. use the lardons from Lidl or Aldi and that’s all you have to propoint!

Sorry its a bit 'bitty' but its easier to post the YouTube links so you can see how other people are making this fab food!

Fantastic losses again! Woo Hoo! Total so far in the challenge is 106lbs that's 7st 8lbs!!!

WOWZER!

Monday motivation

Ever feel like everyone's staring at you .. breathless just walking in a straight line... well it won't always be like that... once you don't give up!

For all the negative comments that I have put up with being 'big' ... no one has ever slagged me off for exercising... last year I did the 'Pink Run' in Dublin...  and when lots of runners who were doing their second lap (its a 5k circuit so you had to go round twice...) and whilst the walkers were still stomping around on our first... they still cheered people on... and I was amazed! "well done" .. 'you can do it'... all smiles and fist pumps ... and it meant the world...

So today... walk outside your door... keep going for 10 mins... and then you HAVE to walk home.. 20 mins DONE... then tomorrow... do it again.. in a week you'll surprise yourself... you've walk little further... a little faster and maybe you'll try 15 mins... PLUS you'll feel a WHOLE lot better about yourself... No excuses unless you're made of sugar and will dissolve!

Week 2 chart below... 37lbs lost in total so far! Rocking it kids!

Hello… My names Doll…

*stands up*
'Hello… My names Doll and I'm a big fat doubter…'

I know I'm always banging on about my Propoints and how many points are this, that and the other… but to be honest… that's what works for me… Weight watchers isn'tt for everyone… some people count calories, for don't  eat carbs… some love slimming world and once you find what you love its make such a difference…  this week, not tracking, nearly killed me… but even as I rolled my eyes stepping on the scales… proof of the pudding or lack of puddings even… -3 lbs! It only feckin' works Ted!

I did have to think a lot more about what I was eating and I probably could have planned it a bit better from the first night, when I'm doing it again I'll be sitting down to do a weekly planner first…  but it really wasn't hard to do! I felt full and because I'm off drinkies till my birthday, there was no Saturday night 'How the hell am I going to have a G&T when Weetabix is a treat?!?!' drama… It was restrictive when it came to the two daily treats, I'm really not OK with the whole Weetabix thing clearly, but this week the reliable old 49 weeklies are back.. praise the lord.. hallelujah!

Its called 'FLEX' and its the middle man between the die hard 'trackers' amongst us *raises paw* and 'filling and healthy only' people.. this allows you to eat all the foods from the filling and healthy and rather than have two daily treats, you get your 49 back to use as you please… if you listen carefully this Saturday night you'll hear the sound of all those wine corks!
