The girl who ate 126 points
in a single day…

By @quinlivan

Yesterday, 11 months since I went back to Weight Watchers, I was given my 14th Silver 7. It’s hard to believe how far I have come in less than a year. Before I started writing this post for The Skinny Doll, I went back and had a read over my previous posts on her site. The post ‘A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step’ is still the one that strikes most resonance with me today, mainly because what I wrote then at the start of my journey I still believe whole-heartedly as I approach goal. “The road ahead may be long and bumpy, the end may seem impossible to get to, and yes we may fall off the beaten track somewhere down the line, but let’s not look forward just yet – look at NOW… at least we have had the balls to turn up at the start line.”

Last Summer (in Dun Laoghaire) vs This Summer (in Spain)

I have learned so much from Weight Watchers over the past year – so much about myself,
about how it is all about making the choices, being in control of what I eat and the power of exercise. In my opinion, the real teachings along the way of my Weight Watchers journey haven’t come from the books or leaflets distributed in class – they have come from the other people who attend the meetings. Other people’s stories, food discoveries, setbacks, frustrations and joys fuel me – it’s the people we encounter along the way who make it an experience. This blog post is about a few people who unbeknownst to themselves gave me the motivation I needed at that time to continue.

Person 1: The girl who ate 126 points in a day

One wet February evening a girl who I had never noticed before spoke up about how difficult tracking is, especially over the weekend. We’ve all been there. For me, Monday to Friday go by and I track my breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks without a bother. The weekend however throws me out of routine – sometimes I’ll have lunch in town or a drinks on a night out.

Anyway, this girl sat there looking so defeated as she told the room how she tracked everything she had on Saturday… on Sunday morning. She had felt she had been ‘a bit’ bold on the Saturday but when she added up her few pints and the Supermacs she had on the way home, along with the Domino’s Pizza she had before she went out – she had eaten 126 points in a the day.

Two things immediately struck me: First, How quick points can add up and spiral out of control without fully realising it. More importantly, she taught me one of the biggest lessons you won’t read in any handout given in class… She was 100% honest with herself and the class. Her honesty has always stuck with me. I don’t know if I would ever confess that to the room, even if I knew it myself.

Person 2: The girl who is very hard on herself

We all know someone who is very hard on themselves – who never gives themselves a pat on the back. They are the people who say things like ‘I only lost a pound’ or ‘I’m up this week but I knew I’d be’. There is one girl in particular who doesn’t go to my class but I know from online. She constantly criticizes herself, either her weight loss is ‘not fast enough’ or if she doesn’t reach her own mini-goals, such as ‘Lose 7lbs this month’, she gets completely deflated, unmotivated and hard on herself – despite actually losing 5lbs that month.

I like to think of myself as a fairly positive person but am guilty of falling in to the ‘very hard on myself’ category too. After a lengthy conversation with this girl on Twitter, I realised that what I was championing in her (her successes), I wasn’t championing in myself. She taught me one of the most important lessons I’ve learned to date… Reward your successes, regardless of their significance in the grand scheme of things. I have so many mini-goals which keep me motivated. I make sure to recognise each one.

If I hadn’t, I can see how easy it is to get lost along the way. I remember a few months ago I was going through a bit of a Doubting Thomas phase. I couldn’t see the wood from the trees. Instead of looking at where I had left to go, I was thinking about the effort it would require to get me there. Instead of looking at how far I had come, I started making excuses to justify why I should make this weight my finish line.

Person 3: The girl who ran a marathon and never came back to class

Early November last year, a girl in class received a well-deserved round of applause from the class as she had run the Dublin City Marathon the day before. She spoke about how difficult it was, how sore she was afterwards and how amazing she felt having completed the marathon.

At the time it was something I couldn’t identify with directly but I could appreciate the immense effort and dedication she had put in. Finishing a marathon is surely something high up on many Bucket Lists. As a 19st guy who had never run a day in his life, I couldn’t connect to her story there and then – now she is all I think about.

I think she stopped coming to (my) class early this year. I don’t know if she is attending a different Weight Watchers class, but I would love to have a chat with her now. I’d love to know if she is still running, I’d love to know how hard the training was, I’d love to know if she is planning on doing another. I have so many questions that may go unanswered because at the time I never made the connection.

Person 4: The guy who… ?

You’ve probably noticed that the people I have talked about are all female. Although Weight Watchers is for Men & Women, you can’t deny there is a distinct lack of men in attendance in classes. Maybe it’s the case that the Men Only classes are busier or all the men just go to different classes than I do.

In the 11 months I’ve been going, I could count on one hand the amount of men who have turned up – and never at the same time. I’ve said it before but I have honestly never felt like Weight Watchers or the meetings have been women focused. Everyone is on the same journey, everyone has room to contribute and everyone learns something from the meetings. I don’t know what the guys are so afraid of!

I want to thank those people for continuing to educate and teach me. I also want to thank all those people in my class in Oranmore, my leader Phil and the people I talk to online (Twitter/blogs etc) who share their successes, food finds and struggles with other people. We all struggle, we all have bad weeks, we have epic weeks and we have mediocre weeks. I always try to take something new from my previous week forward with me into the next week - be it a new dish to try out, a new product to try or a lesson like the ones I’ve mentioned above.

My Weight Watchers journey is far from over (ye won’t get rid of me that easily) but for right now I just wanted to thank all of those who have contributed with their insight to my experience:

To the girl who ate 126 points -
you taught me the importance of being honest with myself.

To the girl who is very hard on herself -
you taught me the importance of recognising my achievements
and successes along the way.

To the girl who ran the marathon and never came back to class –
you have taught me how important it will be to continue coming to class,
even when you see the finish line.

M is for...

Week two of the Smart for Summer challenge and man are you lot rocking it! I was down half a pound and whilst I was a little disappointed, I nearly rolled my eyes and did the 'ONLY' but once I'd typed up this post I was totally over myself!

This week M is for

MEASURABLE
How will you measure your goal? Don't just rely on the number on the scales. This about what you want to achieve with each goal you set, then find a tangible way to measure it!

Take your measurements... physically! I know I'm always going on about it but your body will change as you lose weight and you'll be smaller in size even though the scale says otherwise.. so take out your measuring tape and do your chest, waist, hips, arms and thighs.. gals do the bust too.. and write them down and every month do it all again! You will be surprised!

Take those tight jeans out from the back of the wardrobe and try to beat them on! We all have THAT pair! Then have a good long look and out loud say..  'I will lose 10 pounds in 10 weeks and these will fit me then' and hang em up where they will taunt you every day because if you put them back in the wardrobe it's out of sight out of mind! Determine an amount of weight in and an amount of time otherwise its vague city!

MOTIVATION
The key to staying motivated is setting small sub-goals that you can work towards instead of one larger one. Aim for the next 7 lbs! A silver 7!  These stages of success allow for some recognition... some satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment..

I've lost half a stone, I can lose another half a stone! Mentally it sets a positive mindset and once you have that you're on a roll! Find someone who inspires you and stick with them.. to stay motivated you have to surround yourself with people who are motivated or want to motivate you!

MEETINGS
For those of you who do attend a class… STAY AT IT! You've paid your money otherwise its a very expensive weighing scale. Sit down and give yourself the hour you deserve... talk to the person beside you…they're there for the very same reason.. don't pay €10 and walk out having learnt nothing!

They're not all Marjorie Dawes, I promise!!!

For those who don't have a class.. get yourself a cheerleader! A friend, colleague, mum, dad, sister, brother, cousin, neighbour and tell them you're losing weight and you need a bit of cheering on, someone you know who will support you or you can just chat with when you're having a bad week ... and you'll be surprised at their reaction.. before you know it they'll be doing it too!

MEASURE

Different from measurable! Portion control people ... Above is the same meal on four different size plates... see how much we eat with our eyes... and make sure you have the proportions correct...

Half of your plate should be veggies! a quarter is carbs and the other quarter your proteins!

A good guide is imagine a dinner plate for your greens and a side plate for the rest of your meal...

Have we all weighed out 60g of pasta and rice? no.. well prepare yourselves! You'll probably have a heart attack when you see how small the portions really are! Here's 60gs of brown rice and brown pasta dried and cooked! I've been known this amount of pasta whilst cooking dinner!! The teaspoon is to give you an idea of scale… and this is a normal size cereal bowl...

wholemeal, dried, 1 medium portion 150g = 6 pp

wholemeal, cooked, 1 medium portion 150g = 6 pp

brown, dried, 1 medium portion 60g - 6 pp

brown, boiled, 1 medium portion 150g - 6 pp

Its easy to get heavy handed with the packets and guesstimate and even with cereals, a little extra can be that 1 PP that's holding you back and keeping you from losing! So grab the scales... get some cheapy freezer bags from Lidl or Aldi and portion out your rice and pasta.. you'll get used to seeing what it looks like and feeling how much it weighs.. its a really good exercise! I leave one of each sealed in my cupboard for when I get a little generous with myself!

MISTAKES

Yep... no one is perfect... paws up.. we've all messed up! We all slip up because we're human! Point things wrong, hit the chipper after a cocktail or three.. hoover the last biccie and pretend it never happened.. the trick is to remember, there are 21 meals a week.. just because you screw up one.. doesn't mean you should give up!

As over heard by Mr. Q this week -
“Oh, I’ve already ruined my good eating today. I’ll just eat crap” is like saying “Oh, I dropped my phone on the floor. I’ll just smash it till it breaks.”

SKINNY TANGENT -

Many of you will know him from the challenges, he's my only male followers not to weigh in in secret.. but Mr. Q this week got his 75lb certificate!!! so standing ovation please!!! He's a true inspiration! AND doesn't he look AMAZING!!!! hubba hubba!

MUSCLES
To maintain your muscles, you've got to do some strength training exercises 2 or three times a week... now there's no gym required.. these kind of exercises can be done with two tins of beans and a kitchen chair! I'll be putting up a full post on them during the week! But the basic 7 are...

Squats
One-are rows
Push Ups
Shoulder press
Biceps curls
Kick backs
and the dreaded Plank!

Standing at the kettle... during the ads of your favourite TV show.. you CAN fit them in..
Mmmmmore on these later this week!

MORNINGS

I'm always banging on about it but for years I didn't eat breakfast.. I just drank coffee till midday and was then starving and ate scones and other bold things thinking I wasn't doing any harm at all! Breakfast is the most important meal of the day... you're sick of hearing it but its true! Its breaking your fast... clue's in the name people!

It gets your metabolism going and even if its only a piece of fruit, try to have SOMETHING! A smoothie is a good option too! WW are bringing out some new Breakfast Biccies which I'll be reviewing soon.. but there's lots of options.. a little fruit salad.. some wholemeal toast and nutella... hit up the breakfast page on here and try to have something!! Its a good habit to have and all successful slimmers swear by it!

MEMORIES

Lastly... memories.. some good.. some bad.. so what was it? or WHO was it? What made you step through the door.. and queue up behind a bunch of people all with the same goal of losing weight.. what was that push? Auntie Mary telling you 'sure you're lovely.. such a pretty face' … shame about the rest of you kinda glance! Those photos on facebook that you have NO control over! That skinny sibling who can hoover cream cakes and still be skinny... groan..

When you're about to give up.. REMEMBER... why did I start this... all those too tight clothes that don't fit .. the comments .. the looks.. that feeling of dread when you know the beach is coming and there's not enough sand to hide in! Don't let those emotions get you down.. channel them into positive feelings about your journey and how far you've come and how great you feel!

All about 'M' this week... so stay tuned..

The weigh in post goes up every Friday morning so if you could post your losses here that would help... I think I've caught everyones but I don't want you to think I didn't add you for any other reason other than I missed it .. Weigh ins below.. the usual rules apply if I missed you ... please shout! I'm especially blonde today for some reason!

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step

Part two -

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step
@quinlivan

If you’ve read Part 1 >> (Am I my own worst enemy?) you’ll know I’ve had a long term (often long distance) relationship with Weight Watchers. It has been in my life for the past ten years and like a wave on a shoreline, it has crashed in and flooded around me with great enthusiasm and then ebb back out of my life without even noticing it slip out from under my feet.

On Tuesday, August 28th 2012… I rejoined Weight Watchers. It was one of the easiest yet most difficult decision I’d made in a long time. It was easy with respect to the fact I knew I had to do something about my weight. It was easy because I knew Weight Watchers had worked for me in the past. It was easy because I knew I would be around people who were trying to get their weight (whatever their size) under control.

The difficult part was in the actual execution of my decision, making it a reality, my reality. Looking at my options, Weight Watchers in Galway [on Eglington Street] run a Men Only Class at 8pm on a Monday evening – this was always the one I had gone to before. Joining this class meant I knew when I finish work at 6pm I would either have go home and back into town again or hang around work/town until the class started. A quick google informed me of a class in Oranmore at 6.15pm every Tuesday evening.

I live in Oranmore and pass the class on my way home anyway. I could be home by 7pm which still gave me the evening to myself and not waiting to be weighed in. My only reservation was that it was a mixed class. I didn’t think I would have any problem attending a class with men and women, but as I sat in work on that Tuesday evening thinking about heading to class, I started to get cold feet for some reason.

What if I knew some of the women in the class? What if my next door neighbour was there? What if my friends mum was there? What if the girl who makes my hot chicken baguette in Spar was there? That’s when it dawned on me… More than likely, they don’t want ME to know they are there either and would probably be as embarrassed as I was that we knew each others ‘dirty little secret’. With that in mind, I decided to still go to the Oranmore class straight after work.

As I stood in the queue, I became aware very quickly that I was the only male in attendance. I thought “Feic it, I’m in the queue I may as well stay for tonight – if I don’t like it, I can go back to the Men Only Class in Galway from next week”. This was the only time since re-joining Weight Watchers that I have thought about my gender. I can’t stress that enough! Ladies, don’t be shy – we don’t bite or anything, so be nice to us if you see us in your class.

Phil (The Oranmore Leader) was fantastic - She welcomed me with open arms and told me she was delighted to see another man at class. She also told me not to worry that there are other men who attend the class, they were just gone AWOL this evening. Standing up on the scales and seeing the giant 19st 02lbs grounded me right back down.

Everyone is here for the same reason – everyone here is conscious of their weight – everyone here has bad eating habits, eat the wrong foods or are making wrong food choices. Everyone here is or has gone through what I am going through right now.

Regardless of what your goal/ideal weight is, everyone attending a Weight Watchers class already have one up on those not attending… We’ve taken the first step! Irrespective of age, gender or current body size, all of us should take pride in the fact we have done something to tackle our weight.

The road ahead may be long and bumpy, the end may seem impossible to get to, and yes we may fall off the beaten track somewhere down the line, but let’s not look forward just yet – look at NOW… at least we have had the balls to turn up at the start line.

We are all meant to shine - Week 5 weigh in!

Now, I'm not a religious person.. for lots of personal reasons.. and living in Ireland adds to the distrust I have with an instition like the Catholic church .. but I do believe there's something bigger than us out there.. and I'm a firm believer in KARMA! But this week someone gave me this to read.. whether you're religious or not.. you have every right to be the person you are and look how you like and be what you want to be... weight is what we HAVE ... not who we are!!! So read this.. and then take it in... and read it again!

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

There are some awesome losses 116lbs in total!!!! and a stone gone by Doodymar!!! Email me your address!!! Have a good week and re-read that speech again for good measure! Doll x

PS: I've got some new products to go up in posts this week... if anyone would really like to see stuff reviewed.. let em know! xxx

This week - Why are you here?

Many of us spend half our time wishing for things we could have if we didn't spend half our time wishing - Alexander Woollcott

This weeks meeting was packed.. jammers.. full till the lads had to all stand down the back as we ran out of seats.. and, appropriately, it was all about motivation.. you could smell it in the room! The class weigh loss was over 7 stone!!!! That's a whole person! and after all the rewards were dished out.. we were asked one question... Why are you here? Why did you leave your cosy homes on a dark cold January night to sit in a cold school hall and confess your weakness to food?

There are many reasons why people follow weight watchers... some of the members had had the 'talk' with a doctor which gave them the kick up the pants they needed.. there are 4 brides in the class who have fittings and dresses to get into... their entourage all want to look lovely on the big day... some are aiming at summer holidays, some want to get pregnant and want to be healthier mums... some just need the weekly check in to stay on track... some want to look amazing for the summer and are just sick of feeling lethargic and bblllaaahhhhh!

but what happens when the motivation wanes... week 4.. 5... motivation can evaporate so easily unless you have your goals set out... so allow me to refer you to this...

Motivation

http://theskinnydollsjourney.blogspot.com/2011/05/this-week-3-motivation.html

Even doing one of these .. can keep you on the straight an narrow...

It's not a race.. its a journey.. and everyone is going at a different pace.. and on their own path... we're all going in the same direction but the trick is to keep going and not lose momentum! We're all in it this lardy boat together! Doll x

This week #3 - M.O.T.I.V.A.T.I.O.N

What is MOTIVATION? When you're stumped.. and you can't seem to get into the groove... here's a quick breakdown to give yourself the little push you need...

M - Make a list of reasons WHY you want to lose weight... Why you're doing it? Sometimes you need to see it written down in front of you!

O - Observe those who have already got to goal... they will inspire you.. print off a success story.. get chatting at the meeting.. they will have new tips... they've been where you are!!!

T - Time. Give yourself a time scale.. no ones going to lose 2 stone in a week! Be realistic and be very realistic... take it in small steps.. you will see results!

I - Important... What does this journey mean to you? You being a healthier version of YOU, means you're a healthier mum, sister, wife, friend.. It's important to put yourself first sometimes... if you're at your best for you... then you're at your best for the world.. remember its not a dress rehearsal!

V - Visualise... Put that skinny pic up on the fridge! On your desk... as your screen saver ... on your phone... seeing yourself at the weight you want to be... will mentally put you in the right place... maybe its a dress a size smaller.. hang it up.. take a pic of it and stick it where you can see it... every time you pass it, you'll put the cookies back!

A - Action plan .. You know the programme... you know it works... eat right, move more, sleep, smile, laugh, be kind to your body.. it will repay you with more energy, clearer skin, better moods! Get your plan down and DO IT!

T - Team work... get support... facebook, work, a walking buddy, your ww class, online, twitter.. there are lots of people in the same place as you... they need support too... you can check in once a day or once a month... but just knowing someone is there, will keep you on your toes!

I - Imagine - Losing 1lb a week is 4 stone in a year.. Imagine yourself with that weight gone... see yourself at "that" wedding.. the office Christmas party (no one really wants to wear black from head to toe at Christmas!)... swishing past the "ex" in the sexy maxi dress... imagine how you will feel... and harness that feeling and use it to get yourself going...

O - Onwards - When you've had a bad week.. get over it.. quickly... dwelling on it won't help... you can't UNDO it.. end the week by stepping on the scales and start the week stepping off! Build a bridge and get over it! Move on..

N - New you... That's the goal.. a new healthy you... a better happier version of you.. leave the moody, lethargic, tired you behind and get going!

THIS WEEK #1 - The Journey

I've decided to add another string to Skinny Dolls bow.. so to speak.. my leader is AMAZING.. the talks are SO motivating so I thought I'd share the weekly topics .. there may be something that pushes you through that 'I can't do it..' feeling.. For me they are here to remind me when I think its just too hard! I'm calling them "This Week..." ... enjoy Doll x

This week...

The Journey...

Do you drive a car? Would you pass your driving test again if you had to re-sit it? or have you developed enough bad habits to set you up with some new "L" plates? So many of us refer to our weight loss as a "journey" ... and for many the analogy is true.. From roundabouts to traffic lights the road to goal is rarely a straight line!

Are you stuck on a roundabout? Up a half pound .. down a pound.... up a half... down 1... up 2... you're body doesn't even have the decency to stay the same! Think about what has you there? What push do you need to get off the roundabout and take the exit you need to... if its motivation you need.. hang up your favourite summer dress where you see it EVERYDAY! Stick a pic of it on your phone... I know its only April.. but think about how you would feel this Christmas if you were at goal... whatever mini goal is going to get you back on track.. do it!

Series of bends ahead...
You know its coming... that weekend away.. your nieces wedding ... girls night out... and not too long now.. the summer holidays... its a struggle before you even pack your lip gloss! Events happen because life happens... without all those gigs and functions .. life would be pretty dull.. the way I see these are you have 3 choices.. 1 - Go.. enjoy yourself, enjoy your food (remember though.. food isn't the event!) ... and start afresh the next day ... 2 - Plan in advance.. earn some extra ProPoints, lighten up on the days before and after and let yourself enjoy it but go with the mentality of.. "I'm having dessert and I can't wait!" and why shouldn't you... but if there's going to be alcohol.. maybe drive... don't have a starter.. you'll enjoy your dessert all the more 3 - Be miserable.. stare longingly at the cocktail list... and let everyone know "I'm on a diet.. and I CAN'T have fun!" ...

Having a bumpy ride? Then strip it back to basics.. Go back to the start... do not pass go, do not collect €200, go directly to the start... re-read your books... start at zero and get your calculator out.. point things you 'think' you know.. be sure.. don't forget your water... exercise.. see where you're missing something... everyone goes through a bumpy patch... generally we all know what and how we got there - usually birthday cake and sauvignon blanc.. just don't turn back.. ride it out, as the ad says.. you're SO worth it..

Services...
Pulled in have we? Having a little break? Using it as an excuse? Giving yourself some "time off" means you aren't really seeing this as healthy eating.. "its a diet and I need a break from it!" ... There's no need for your life to be all consumed by ProPoints and trackers.. but you are learning a healthier way of living... are you really hungry? Grab the apple first.. then if you REALLY want the chocolate.. go ahead.. but are you really hungry for chocolate? You want to eat healthy for life, whilst LIVING! SO yeah enjoy the chocolate cake but tomorrow have the apple... its all about balance! No one got fat eating apples.. unless they were in a pie!

Steep Incline ahead...
You know that feeling when you wake up and think.. its just too hard.. I've got too much to lose.. I'm NEVER gonna make goal... remember at the top of a steep incline is a view and free wheel down! It doesn't go on forever... push through and the rewards will be amazing.. you'll even surprise yourself at how strong you are...

Give Way.. Yield...
Are you putting others first? A people pleaser? If you are not at your best for you.. then you're not at your best for anyone... to be a healthier version of you benefits everyone.. put you at the top of the list sometimes... take time for your exercise.. your meals..

Clamped... aaaaahhhh .. sabotage! Someone got their claws into you... 'oh go on'.. 'just have one'.. 'it won't hurt'.. 'you're thin enough'... you know the deal.. do this journey for you! If they don't support you.. let them know it... remind them that you would support them... are they true friends with your best interests at heart?

How to turn a U-TURN to your advantage? Walk out the front door and keep walking for 10 mins ... turn about and walk BACK! There's your 20 mins exercise! You've really only got to walk for ten.. the rest is bringing you back home!
