The old ones are the best…

"The good old days are now"
Tom Clancy

The good old faithfuls… Try just one off the list…

Start moving…
You don’t need a gym membership or expensive workout program to get started, you just need to move! Put your kids in their buggy and go for a walk… grab the dog and hit the park… Put on some music and dance around your house while you clean… Leave the house… walk for 5 mins and you HAVE to walk home! Up it to 10 mins, 15 mins and before you know it you're flying around for an hour! Its a great way to stalk the neighbourhood too!

Step it up…
Whenever you can find a way to get in extra steps during the day, do it! Park at the far end of the car park when you go to the shops, take the stairs instead of the lift, etc. It all adds up, trust me! A girl in one of the classes I go to… can't get out to exercise at the moment so she carries each piece of clean laundry up the stairs ONE AT A TIME! Not even a pair of socks, one at a time! But she's getting her work out in… there really is NO excuse! You got a step in your house? then off you go...

Follow the 'One Mile Rule'...
If your errands are less than one mile away, walk instead of driving… or park where you can do all your little jobs within a mile radius instead of moving your car each time.

Dance at the ads…
Get moving during the commercials of your favorite TV shows… each break is approx 3 mins… Dance, jump rope, run in place…anything that gets your heart rate up… a friend of mine, is as I would put it a Soap Queen! Monday night starts with Hollyoaks, Coronation Street, Emmerdale, Eastenders then another Corrie, and for each ad break, she does step ups on her yellow pages! He husband thinks she's a bit mad but she's getting exercise into her day and burning calories… smart lady!!!

Strength Training…
Add in some strength training to help build muscle and boost your metabolism. No weights? No problem! grab two tins of beans or fill up two water bottles and your good to go… any more excuses? Push-ups, crunches, and basic squats are a great way to tone your muscles using your own body weight. No equipment required! Do a few when you first wake up in the morning to get your blood pumping.. you all remember my LUNGE around the house day… if no ones watching… know what I'm saying…

Don't eat anyone elses food!
This is for the mums… You’re not a garbage disposal, so stop finishing your kids’ food! You know exactly what I’m talking about. That half a fish finger on their plate… that piece of toast they couldn't finish… All those extra calories add up over time… stop it! Tip: squirt some fairy liquid over it and its now inedible! Once I'm done in a restaurant I cover my plate with salt… even if I WANTED to eat it I wouldn't be able…

Get rid of the junk...
It’s simple – if it’s not there, you can’t eat it! Go through your cupboards and fridge and get rid of the junk food… This means all the goodies you know are there from Christmas… the fancy cheese.. the little box of choccies you got 'just in case' someone came over and you didn't have anything for them! all the things you know are bad for you and they will be screaming your name when temptation comes running and you just can’t seem to resist… if they're not in the house.. you're not going to go off track!

Eat more colors
Replace the junk with fresh fruits and vegetables. Need something crunchy? Try raw carrots or cut up some bell peppers. Craving something sweet? Keep fresh fruit on hand for a sweet treat.

Don’t drink your fruit
I know juicing is all the rage right now, but skip juice and eat the whole fruit instead... You’ll get more heart-healthy fiber in your diet, and you’ll stay satisfied longer… a glass of orange juice is 1PP an orange is 0PP because of the way the body uses energy to break it down…

Keep a tracker…
Keeping a food log helps control what you REALLY eat.. Write down how much you eat, and you’re more likely to practice portion control. It also gives you a better idea of what your eating habits really look like. Do you skip meals? Do you go straight for the ice cream when you’re feeling stressed? Seeing these things in black and white can be a real wake-up call, and can help you see what changes you need to make.

Drink more water…
Make water your best friend. Besides quenching your thirst, water helps flush toxins from the body, aids in digestion, and helps maintain the health of your hair and skin… Water can also help alleviate hunger by making you feel full… a lot of the time you aren't hungry you're thirsty!

Drink water with lemon…
Adding the lemon helps to detoxify the liver and metabolizes fat, so this can speed up your metabolism.. its a difficult habit to get into but its so worth it…

Make a date...
You are more likely to stay motivated if you have someone doing this with you. Find a friend to exercise with you, buddy up with someone in class, and make it a weekly (or daily) date to get together… even if you exercise alone… find a pal online you can be accountable too.. they'll check up on you and you can check up on them! its win-win

Get technical…
Use technology to help keep you motivated... Sign up for e-newsletters from your favorite health & fitness sites, follow your favorite.. ahem.. fitness celebrities on Facebook and Twitter, (see what I did there? ahem.. ) or join an online fitness group for accountability and support… for anyone wanting some running motivation and inspiration check out @quinlivan's blog >>> HERE <<<

Set goals
Start small, such as making it your goal to exercise three times a week or lose five pounds this month... When you reach one goal, set a new one... Work up to your big goals, and reward yourself when you reach each small goal – but not with food! Treat yourself to some new workout gear, or a massage… something just for you!

Try one of these this week… make it a New Years Habit… resolutions get broken... goals are achieved!

and the oscar goes to….

So here it comes the end of 2013 and all the Christmas festivities… This kinda reads like an oscar speech but its all practice for when George Clooney brings me on the read carpet yeah?

On me way George...

I want to wish you all a very happy, safe and healthy Christmas… regardless of your weight or size… I hope you are spending quality time with the ones you love… you never know where we will all be this time next year so live in the moment and tell them you love them… blame the brandy butter but just do it… people like and need to hear how much you love them… life is short… and as they say.. its not a dress rehearsal!

Regardless of religion or your beliefs, most of you spend this time with family… silly socks, karaoke and movies you'd never admit to watching at any other time of the year… these are the memories you will make… and the memories you have of loved one no longer with us… so cherish every second!! If there is someone you know who might be lonely or need a bit of company … take the time to drop in… send them a txt… have a coffee with them… it might make all the difference… and they'll be so grateful… and if there's someone who you've fallen out with… argued with or just simply let fall off the radar cause you were too busy… make the effort… I've done it… its worth it!

OK preachy bit over…

To all of you who've done the challenges this year… commented… tweeted… and motivated me and my followers… thank you… the support on here is unreal and I'd be lost without you! This little blog started with me being very lonely and wanting some support on my journey and because of you lot I'm well on the way to goal… still a bit to go but even I can really see the difference …

Says it all I suppose...

All the positive comments, the support and advice you give each other and even the way I now deal with the negative ones, just shows how much I've come on my journey and its a privilege to follow you on yours… there are some AMAZING losses on the challenges if I was to start naming people you'd be here all day and there's selection boxes to be opened people!

This year I could CHOOSE what to wear... NOT wear clothes JUST to cover my ass!

To my amazing new leader… Thank you for being the positive motivator that you are… facing the scales every week, even on the BAD …. VERY BAD weeks turns out to always be for the best… x

11lbs in total for the Christmas Challenge in Class..

Mr. Q over >>> HERE <<< with his motivational posts! the pics say it all…

The twitterati… the FB gang… and all the instagrammers who don't block me when I bombard them with the PROPOINT values of my daily dinner… cause its clearly FACINATING! ;)

To my AMAZING personal friends who drop the comments that they've been on here and read a post… you are FABULOUS!!! I love you all!

There are some changes coming to the blog in the spring time… more fun stuff and challenges to get to final goal … and there's a new twist to the WW program in the new year… I'll post about it when you've all come down from your Christmas sugar high!

Don't panic you won't need to buy new cookbooks! Tangent: THAT was my biggest fear!!! Remember last time and it changed to PRO points not just points… HOURS spent pointing recipes!!! not this time!!! Its the little things… ahem…

Have a very happy Christmas, remember its Christmas DAY not Christmas MONTH so don't go too MAD but enjoy every second and here's to a fantastic start to 2014!

The pen is mightier than the scalpel... WEEK 3

OK... So it's tracking... I know ... I know....

Don't you just get fed up pointing things sometimes? Wouldn't it be nice to just get up... have your breakfast and not fret that you won't have enough points by dinner time... just to eat and enjoy food... and on holidays you do... in the past, sadly, its always led to a big fat UP on the scales... but this holiday I'm noticing I'm making changes without even trying... strangely.. I'm brainwashed... I'm pointing in my head subconsciously... I know by looking at something how many points are in there... and without using the numbers I'm just making better choices, funny how you never switch off... maybe that's a life changing thing ... but tracking is the one thing all successful members remark on... and honestly... the weeks I track diligently, are the weeks I'm down... medication or not... so it feckin works...

Whether its a nice notebook, try a free program online like the Daily Plate, FitDay, or Sparkpeople or a fancy app on your phone... there are lots of ways to track your food! so excuses will be ignored!

Check out Mr. Qs post >>> HERE <<<

It's even better if you're the organized type who can plan out your meals and know you'll have exactly 5PP every morning for brekkie... 6PP for lunch... etc... because you know exactly what you're having... and how many Propoints you'll have for dinner, treats, birthday parties, date night, cinema trips... and meal planning is so economical... just sitting down before you go food shopping can make a huge difference when you've got a precise list and don't deviate from it! No supermarket specials allowed!!!

Writing everything down make you see exactly where you're going wrong and what kind of eater you are... you might think you're an angel till you track your munchies at night time... you might weigh out your pasta and see your portion sizes are way off... Write it ALL down... every bite... if you eat your kid's left over fish finger, write it! If you dip it in ketchup write that too.. if you lick the bowl after you make a cake, track it... If you taste dinner as you cook it, track it... Every single thing... If you've never done this... it will be an eye opener... and it doesn't matter if you're writing Propoints, Syns, calories.. whatever plan you're on ... it will make a difference... we can be very 'forgetful' sometimes! It will also show you how much or how little you're eating of certain foods... not enough veg? too much fruit? mid-night feasts?

For people rolling their eyes "I do this ALLLL the time"... then write down how you feel... are you happy? sad? annoyed? angry? Look at the time of day you are eating and why? How hungry were you really? on a scale of 1 to 10? Were you even hungry at all? Think about WHY you eat what you do and see if you make a healthy choice every time...

No chart this week but post your losses below and normal service will resume shortly ... *hiccup*... x

The lunchbox has landed!

Ask not what you can do for your country. Ask what's for lunch.
Orson Welles

I know people always blab on about breakfast being the most important meal of the day and it is.. it starts you metabolism... if you eat the right kind, it can get you through to lunch without the munchies... but skipping lunch .. isn't really a good idea either.. and its all too easy when you're heading out for dinner later to think that saving those lunchtime points is going to help! Here's seven really good reasons why you shouldn't skip lunch!

1 • You'll eat fewer snacks..
You know EXACTLY what I mean.. 'sure I didn't have any lunch.. I'll STARVE! AND this is only 2pp + 4pp + 1pp' etc etc.. Eating lunch at your desk at your screen means you'll eat twice as many snacks if you took a break away from it... Your brain doesn't register what you've eaten when your mind is on something else! Usually if you've got the right change its the vending machine!

You're body will be happier!
Sitting down all day and you'll burn 350 calories or less than you're working pals who get up and move about! Research has shown too that women who sit a lot have higher levels of insulin .. leading to type two diabetes.. so GET UP!

You'll be happier!
Getting out for even 15 mins for a walk will top up your vit D and you need more of that with the winter coming, more Vit D means more serotonin and that's what beats the winter blues!

Your back will thank you!
Physio's most popular clients aren't the sporting hero's with dodgy Achilles tendons that we all think... its the desk bound workers! Your body isn't designed to sit in one position for a long time... Sitting for too long compresses your spinal discs ...

Tangent... I'm a victim of this! My back suffers from either sitting on my bottom looking at a screen for hours.. or pretending I'm superwoman and lifting stuff that's WAY too heavy! My chiropractor also told me the lump I found in my bum, cue dramatic music, was in fact my hip bone.. I can feel bones now! Chuffed I was... much to his eye rolling... ahem.. carry on...

... and every time you get up.. you relieve that pressure! A lil lunchtime stroll will stretch them out again! Don't even get me started on your eyes!

5 - You'll actually get more done!
The day you're too busy is actually the day you need to take a break! The longer you work.. the less productive you become... you're mood, motivation and concentration will improve with just 10 mins walking about...

You'll be nicer to live with!
Having a good old bitch and gossip with a colleague pacing around the car park at lunch time is essential! Worst thing you can do it sit at your desk.. bottle it up and take it home with you! Your family love you... not all the drama from work!

You'll improve your digestion!
The faster you eat, the larger the bites of food in your stomach, the more likely you are to suffer from indigestion and acid reflux! You'll also gulp air down and you won't be pretty to sit beside later on! Chew your lunch properly... and we all know it takes 20 mins for the brain to catch up with out tummies!

So no more skipping lunch... you're entitled to a break.. so take it.. and use it wisely!

I can't even begin to tell you all how much I want that Lego lunch box! LOL

BLTs

'Mmmmmmm pork chops and bacon .. my two favorite animals!'
Homer Simpson

Oh you thought I was going to babble on about one of these beauties... *drools*

Sorry kids... I'm on a tracking rant... BLTs.. in Weight Watchers camp, stands for - Bites, licks and tastes... We've all done it.. a lick of icing, a nibble of the other halfs cookie... "I'll only have a bite' .. 'No I won't have chips, salad for me .. well I'll just have one or two of yours!'... the kids didn't finish all their fish fingers.. but they managed to make their way into your gob! None of these little beauties ever see the light of day on the trackers of the world.. then we hop on the scales.. righteous.. 'wait for it.. Every single thing that goes into your gob... needs to be accounted for.. EVERY. SINGLE. THING!!!! Its really that simple! NASA can hold off on the research... we're not gonna cure cancer with this info... but as the meerkats say... simples!

TRACK PEOPLE.. just see the difference it makes... one week.. and be honest.. cause if you're lying on your tracker.. the only person you're fooling is you!

"T" is for...

TIME-SPECIFIC

We've all done it.. I'm going to lose 3 stone! TA DA!!! *puts kettle on*
Um.. by when exactly? … and how much each week? …
you've got to tie yourself down to a finishing line..
a rolling deadline never gets completed! I know this for a fact!

Say it out loud..
by Christmas I want to be a stone lighter..
This month I want to walk 20K...
This week I'm going to track all my food...
I will exercise 3 times this week...
There's your deadline...

I want to lose weight … um.. yeah.. that's great but you'll be doing that for years if you don't set yourself a definitive timeline! And yes.. things change and you don't lose the amount you thought you would.. but you REDEFINE your timeline… and set stages ..
And ask yourself... What can I do in six month, six weeks, today?

TELL PEOPLE

Keeping your new lifestyle changes a secret means it never really has to happen because no one else knows! Now I'm not saying take out ad in the Irish Times and there's some people who you just don't want them to know because they'll just sabotage you and we've all got the family aunt who just says 'ah but you have a lovely face' when you've lost a stone!!! But by 'outing' yourself means you're more likely to follow through on your goals! If the lady in the cafe knows you're taking skinny milk now and using Canderel then that's someone who gets you're making a change.. a coffee shop near where I work, got the little Canderel dispenser for me, the guy noticed I rooted through my handbag for mine every morning and just got one in.. now they have the satches because other people wanted it but just didn't ask!

I have a similar relationship with my SuperValu manager.. I think he dreads seeing me chasing after him! But if there's something out in the market I don't see why he can't stock it! My WW class piles in there on a Thursday and we're all really motivated.. if he has the products people want … they will buy them.. 'If they build it…' well ya know the rest .. just don't be afraid to ask..

Go for a walk at lunch time.. and see if anyone wants to come with you.. a 15 min stroll away from your desk having a gossip, is something that becomes a regular habit and people then know.. 'ah she's not at her desk she's probably gone for her walk' … you don't have to announce it over a group email.. people will notice and think.. 'go you' and 'would you mind if I escape the mad house with you!'... and you don't have to announce you're in Weight watchers now and you're earning activity points and you want a curly wurly on Friday.. just a 'anyone fancy a walk at lunchtime?' will get someone to tag along.. plus who doesn't love a good gossip!?

Your housemates, partner, siblings, choose people who you know will back you and go for it… they'll join you and support you and be delighted to do so! It'll start new healthy habits with them! You'll be doing them a favor too!

Keeping it a secret just means you can give up much easier!

TRACKING

One of the top reasons weight watchers works for me and many other people I know... the weeks I track are the weeks I'm down.. I just refuse to write in 'chocolate biscuit' and point it! I use my points like money in the bank and anyone who knows me knows I'm quite a thrifty one! Whether its on an app.. See Mr. Qs fab review > HERE.. or you've got a notebook that you just write everything down in … tracking is the best way to see what you're eating, when and why! My first few weeks of proper tracking, made me realize what a night grazer I am! I'm not hungry but a cup of tea needs a biccie.. and I didn't realize how many nibbles I was having! Its a good eye opener.. and keep it where you can get to it.. on the fridge, in your bag, on your desk.. wherever is handy for you!

As my leader says.... if it goes in your smacker.. it goes on the tracker!

Plus, its the only way to be really honest with yourself.. I mean the only person you're fooling if you don't track properly is you right?

TORTURE

The first few sessions when you start exercising you wonder what the hell you're doing out in the rain stomping about listening to some sergeant major! But that feeling once you've worked out.. an hour in the pool.. walked around the block... it really doesn't matter what.. its worth it! Muscles will ache.. but that's cause you haven't used them in a while! Plus once you really get going you start to notice that you're walking further, cycling faster and uphills... I know the old cliche no pain no gain... but its really very true... you've got to push yourself and adding exercise to any healthy lifestyle can only be a good thing! And you'll feel so good once you're done!

TEMPTATION

Its all around you.. but you've got to remember WHY you started this.. and it wasn't to torture yourself but TRANSFORM yourself! Be a better, healthier, less tired, fabulous version of you! Is a cream cake worth it? Sometimes yes.. and no one is saying you can't have one.. but if not having it means you're a pound closer to goal… then ask yourself do you really really want it?

Temptation is put in our way every single day... the tea break avec biccies at work, the Friday after work drinkies which end up in the chipper, your mother insisting that you have full fat milk and butter cause your bones are still growing! Even getting petrol is a nightmare... and there will always be someone who won't be happy with you changing... but it can be so satisfying not giving into temptation and realising that you're stronger willed than you thought!

TRANSFORMED

That dreaded before pic! We've all got one and it was probably the reason why you decided to make the change... but we also have the time when we felt great on holidays… a dress/pant size can transform you! Your lifestyle is being transformed… Take a look at some of the success stories online > HERE … see what made them click... see their confidence .. how some of them never thought they could do it.. it can be you.. you can change your bad habits.. if you want it badly enough! Yes there are days when we feel like the caterpillar all sluggish and slow.. but transformation takes time.. be patient with yourself.. or you'll just give up and who wants to be a slug forever!

THIRSTY

Water.. I know, I know.. nagging again… but it flushes out all the bad toxins from your body and really aids weight loss! Its good for your kidneys, liver, skin, headaches so much... Leave a bottle in the car, a glass beside the kettle, every time you put it on… drink a glass! Have a fancy glass on your desk... If you find it hard.. use flavored sugar free cordials.. there's a great selection of flavors… blackcurrant, orange, apple, lime.. add a slice of lemon or lime.. make your own flavored water! Just get it down you!

Here's < a link to the online calculator that works out how much water you should be drinking every day...

TRUST

There can be weeks when you've been the best tracker on the planet and the weight loss is a no show... so I'm posting it again...

if you're exercising then you're building muscle, which will in turn burn more fat! So hang in there for a few weeks... trust your body and don't give up on it... it's doing it's job and the weight loss will show!

Chart posted below.. I know I've missed out a few weigh ins .. if you tweeted or FB'd just check to see I got you... if not let me know! Two weeks till the bank holiday.. heads down!

Aaaaaaannnnnddddd before I forget... TimeforaChange got to goal this week those last few pounds were stubborn but she's focused so hard!!!

Aaaaaaaaaannnnnnnddddd Mr. Q hit a 6 stone weight loss! If that's not inspiring enough for you I don't know what is!

Thanks for all the holiday wishes I had the fabbest time! Clearly I'm a New Yorker at heart... I'll keep at the lotto and weight loss and one of these day eh!?
